BLOCK STARTER BLUES Sign In

WHEN STARTING MY '68 CHEVELLE 396 THERE IS A METALIC CLICK THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE STARTER DRIVE HITTING THE FLYWHEEL. REPEATED TRIES FINALLY RESULTS IN THE DRIVE ENGAGING AND THE CAR STARTS FINE. TRIED SHIMS, NEW FLYWHEEL, ETC...NO CHANGE. USE OF SHIMS SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE THREW A HANDFUL OF BOLTS IN A BLENDER. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Re: BLOCK STARTER BLUES Sign In

I know you said that you’ve already tried shims, but try it again using the procedure below. If you do then your also checking how true the flywheel is. Just take your time and have a good supply of different thickness shims.
I would also replace the starter even if you already have, due to the fact that the drive may be worn from cranking the engine in the position that it’s in now. There is also a possibility that the end frame bushing of the starter are out of align or worn.
Check that the mating surfaces of the block and the starter are 100% clean.
If you do all of this and the starter is still not engaging properly, have a look at the main ground and positive cables. The best way to check them would be by doing a voltage drop test on the individual cables. Any more then .1 of a volt, per foot of cable is excessive.
That big block wants a lot of juice to get it spinning and if its not getting a full shot of battery voltage it may just click.
If your not sure of how to do a voltage drop test let me know and I’ll try and explain.
Dan.

Re: BLOCK STARTER BLUES Sign In

THANKS FOR THE TIPS. I'M GOING TO TRY THE SHIMS ONE MORE TIME AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THE FLYWHEEL IS NEW AND APPEARS TO BE TRUE WHEN OBSERVED CRANKING. THE STARTER IS A NEW GM HI PERFORMANCE UNIT FRESH OUT OF THE BOX. I HADN'T CONSIDERED THE BATTERY CABLES. THEY LOOK FINE, BUT I KNOW THAT THEY ARE AT LEAST TEN YEARS OLD. THAT COULD VERY WELL BE THE PROBLEM. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO A VOLTAGE DROP TEST, BUT I MAY GO AHEAD AND REPLACE THEM ANYWAY. I APPRECIATE THE ADVICE GREATLY. I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT I FIND OUT.

NEW BATTERY CABLES SEEM TO HAVE DONE THE TRICK. INSTALLED THEM AFTER WORK THE EVENING BEFORE YESTERDAY AND IT HAS CRANKED LIKE A CHAMP EVERY TIME I HIT THE KEY SO FAR. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ADVICE.

Hi Dan,

Couldn't sign in after 6 tries at the site you have listed?? Could be some protection software on my end?? Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Re: BLOCK STARTER BLUES Sign In

I just thought that another site that is on the same wavelength as this one could benefit both sites.
The admin and the mod’s at the other site (I happen to be one) are there for the same reason as we are here and that is to help people in making the right direction.
Try and make the person asking the question more comfortable in their decision, as to allow a repair facility to perform the said repairs or not.

There's Room for all sites Sign In

Hi again Dan,

I don't think there's a conflict. These sites can all get along. I DO moderate at CarJunky, but I consider that job as just to keep it clean which it is! I've read almost every post and will change or delete things that are NOT family friendly. Plenty of sites for junk out there and I don't want this one to get polluted.

There are some (all) friendly folks here and I like that. I don't think there's a conflict between similar sites. Folks will go where they want to go no matter what we do.

Best to you, Tom Greenleaf
