What is the location of the camshaft position sensor on 93 ford taurus Sign In

I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 GL sedan. Where is the location of the camshaft position sensor on my car? Is it inside the distributor or on the engine? If it is on the engine then where is it located?

Does the top of distributor look like this...…..
>
IF so that's it and it's on top of distributor. '93 model year could be funky make sure you need this AND that it looks like that.
It's non adjustable.
Another mid year model it may have a cam synchronizer - again '93 could be either that I just found.
Why do you suspect it's bad in that you asked?

The Cam sensor is inside the distributor and a total nightmare to change requiring a press to disassemble the distributor. If you have a bad one the best way to approach it is with a reman distributor.

Agree now. If those small bolts at this age most would just bust.

If gear to camshaft needs to come off it too can bust.

If sure you need this really should put a reman in exactly where the old one came out could be hard to do and know it's right,

What is the best way to tell if the cam sensor is bad?

What is the car/engine doing that you suspect any problem? This is pushing 30 years old now, an OBDI car I have the last known code reader for it is wrong most of the time.

AT the age check wires to the distributor and the plug. What history do you have on this it's a full blown antique car now (25 model years for vehicles) need to look around for obvious things.

WHAT IS IT DOING WRONG or are you just curious?

I we started off backwards with this thread first what is the problem then let's move on.

Again, history and condition overall this was old 15 years ago totally matters,

The car starts up and then shuts off. You have to press on pdeal after starting it up to keep it on. The spark plugs, wires were replaced about 3 months ago.

Does it quit doing that if you allow it to warm up? Fuel injection has to sense it's a cold engine to deliver enough IF IT SNAPS OUT OF THAT.

If it keeps doing that it's possible it's in some "relearn" mode forgot how to idle happens to some when battery power is lost till it can self adjust out of that despite OBDI some did that was annoying as all get out.

That or a leak (vacuum most popular issues) to find it can't adjust out of "unmetered air" getting into intake manifold.

3.8s I knew of a zillion all gone now this old way too many miles or rust issues the most of what kills vehicles where I am, MA inland a bit use of road salts maxed out - right here not north of me so much it stays cool/cold so much less or no salt use needed.

I now don't think your on the right diagnosis of what's wrong. I'd begin with looking for areas for a vacuum leak including intake manifold gasket up and back to where fresh air comes in,

Re: What is the location of the camshaft position sensor on 93 ford taurus Sign In

AYOR you can use "BraKleen" brand spray at intake gasket or head gasket too. Smoke machine perhaps best bet you don't have one. Do not spray that stuff at painted things just targeted spots it will make engine running quit or almost stall if vacuum leak found. From ancient memory this engine's power steering is front right stressed the engine's gaskets with poor brackets! Most just poured out anti-freeze out tailpipes but those gaskets were poorly made new. If just that replacement parts solved the impending doom.

Engine is sideways intended to be in for RWD vehicles it didn't have this problem with just gaskets.

Now any rubbery hose or vacuum storage can a maybe. Use all care removing a hose as vacuum trees they are called will snap off the connection unfixable to me.

Rubber products are perishable if vacuum storage is metal just pinch the hose to it if it busts put in a new hose all the way.

Sorry to be this verbose - this car is YEARS newer than what I have + drive right now!!!

Other: Possible a totally hidden leak you'll never find have educated guess by condition of plugs coming out tell the story.

Leaves a compression test in order at some point.

Yes you can fix anything - finding it is the problem AND being sure.

You can get codes from this car I forgot without the tool I posted it here ages ago is a trapezoid thing without apparent reason looks like unplugged something.

No time for me right now but was posted here how to jump that with a wire and count blinks of CEL (check engine light) if this monitored an item it only says that circuit has a fault NOT a part to replace.

BTW sport they put this in 89 Lincoln Continentals (wow costly things) same engine was hell on earth new too much other junk, heat on things a failure of a car well known one worst car from new. Never mind HERE TO HELP YOU FIND WHAT AND WHERE to go next no $$ motivation by any of us - here to help!

I don't think this is a vacuum problem but you can check for that anyway.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

You can try cleaning and lubing the IAC but they usually need replacing when they start acting like this.

Can the leak be coming from the exhaust manifold to cause my problem? Like a exhaust manifold gasket leak? I see smoke coming from this area.

No, an exhaust leak won't cause stalling.

I have already changed out the IAC with one I got from a junk yard and it made no difference.

That's not surprising with a junkyard part. These things rely on being free and loose inside and sitting around a junkyard for a year or so is not a friendly atmosphere for that.

Clean the throttle body first and disconnect the battery for a minute before starting it.

I have done all of that. I also replaced the mass air flow sensor and the EGR pressure feedback sensor. Will it hurt my distributor if I clean out the inside of it with CRC QD electronic cleaner. I still have the original distributor in the car and though the inside does not look too bad it is dirty and corroded a bit.

That won't help a thing. I think you still have a problem with the IAC if you have no codes.

How do you test the IAC with a mulitimeter. I will test it.

If you crank the car and it right away cuts off a symptom of a bad IAC? And what about you crank the engine and it won't start? Is that a condition of a bad IAC?
