What happend with this engine? Sign In

Hello everyone!

13000 km ago I was working on Kia Sportage 2009 2.0 crdi engine because injector failed. I did everything and more just to be sure that this car runs like it should. But this happend:

https://pix.sfly.com/p8VDSY
https://pix.sfly.com/S3CiR3

Can anyone explan what happend? Car wasnt overheating, no smoke... Camshaft is like new, head gasket is like new, injectors were tested and restored 13000km ago. Owner of this car took injctor to workshop where they restored them but they say that is ok. Is possible that injector survived this mess? Or is more likly that they cover up asses and restore injector again because they were under warranty?

Please help me with possible explanations for this mess.

Tried to make pics show directly - hope so.

Unless I am not understanding something what you said, you had this car fixed and running as it should so you said.
Owner of this car took it somewhere else - "a workshop" or whatever you mean but suggests another place messed with it out of your hands. It apparently worked with what you fixed for 13,000 Km, someone else touches it then in my book THEY own it now not you.
Would take some more checking but don't think this engine survived whatever the heck went wrong.

If owner just continued to drive this with a problem and didn't inform you right away - all depending on your agreement of fitness of your work for some amount of time and kms I don't think this is your problem.

What do you now want to do now that you stuck your head back into it with someone else's work you really know nothing about?

General rule if not a legality: Last one to mess with it owns it. Perhaps find out who really did what and get out of this job.

I'm not there, can't prove anything just going on what you said. You are taking on what happened AFTER someone else messed with it.

This IMO is all new work again to decide what you and the customer would like to do which is probably a new engine,

First time when this engine broke down, owner took injectors to workshop nearby. They restore and test injectors and give warranty (it is not over jet), but I install them. And now I took engine apart to see what happend and I find this ****. And over again owner took injector to this workshop, leave it on the desk and went to work. After while he get message that injector is fine. Can that be possible after this mess? I am 99% shure that injector faild and did this...

I was driving this car 2 weeks before broke down. It was like new... No smoke, water level ok, oil level ok...

Anyone know what cause this?

? So you just installed injector(s) at first and all was well? Stayed well for the 13,000 kms and you had driven it as well 2 weeks before this - right?

1. Are you in biz for car repair at all or just do this for someone - what's that story? Generally a tech/mechanic doesn't deal with customers doing parts runs or repairs elsewhere YOU would and then YOU own it meaning you touched it you are supposed to know it was fine or not.

This is a rock and hard place. That engine is trashed now. Look at just picture again of cylinder head and where wet, melted junk, and signs of leakage where gasket would be..........

Lower left looks like gasket allowed transfer of coolant or combustion gasses to pass thru and right head looks wet from over fueling or just a mess from taking it apart - can't say all about it.

This looks more like it was overheated, beat to death type problems to me. I still can't be "judge and jury" to why.

If you are and sure seem to need to blame this on something or someone about now I say owner drove it way too long with a problem you didn't discover or just real lousy luck?

IDK - This site isn't about who's responsible for what at all just opinions without being there despite decent pictures what happened when not witnessed by you but rather the driver of the car perhaps a person drove the thing and you don't know about and something went all wrong or beat on?

There's what appear to me as melted alloy metal shown. That doesn't just happen over normal conditions we can agree on. Whatever was going on the car was driven running horribly IMO for some time and doesn't always take long but long enough for that mess.

This stinks. Now you've got an "autopsy" shown and trying to find the cause and don't blame you as you touched it if nothing else.

I can't make the call on this. I'd let insurance and hope you have it decide and usually will in a paying customer's favor if all was equal. Now the "BUT" --

The car is older now, stuff just happens sometimes without explanation and throw in neglect up to someone did this on purpose to get a new or good used engine out of it?

Perhaps if you can get a written report on it from another professional tech on what was possible would help.

It's all messy biz about it,

Could be the result of severe detonation. Is there a hole in the top of the piston under all that junk?

It's a diesel. It runs on detonation.

By severe detonation I'm referring to too much heat in the combustion chamber from over advanced fuel injection timing and/or a leaking injector.

Thank you for informations. I took this piston to an expert and his opinion is the same as yours.
