Weird noises in park.. Car is loud and 'tapping' when driving too Sign In

2014 Chrysler 300 - 5.7 Hemi AWD

The knocking gets faster when driving, it's just more subtle. it seems like it's in the lower gears like first and second gear if I get into third gear it's almost inaudible.

When I'm in park, neutral or reverse , the knocking in the car overall is just louder. Once I shift it out into drive, then I can goes away a lot and the loudness of the car decreases substantially. Once I start driving however it becomes more audible.

It was really weird because yesterday is when it started to happen about 20 miles after I filled up my tank. I read that you should use mid-grade gas with the hemi engines, so I always use midgrade

anyway after about 25 miles is when it started to happen. When I was slowing down to about 25 mph the car sounded like... an airplane sort of.. only when downshifting in the first gear though.

The really weird thing is that there's no check engine light, and yesterday when I was driving home from work, it resolved itself. This morning it was totally fine, no issues, and no knocking or sputtering... until I got about 2 miles from my work again.. which is where it started acting up yesterday

Any thoughts?

IDK is the key answer so far but suggest check oil and coolant fluid levels NOW!
It's kinda newish for extreme problems if not beat to death by drivers still just an IMO.
How many miles? What are the other possible factors for this car exactly like a sudden or unusual temp change and or recent work on it.

I'm aiming at it's cold and folks forget things like adding water to cooling systems for a leak not fixed till it freezes oddly (it's happened) the radiator first while driving just can't flow.

It should be full of warnings on dash lights - don't trust those check yourself all things vital to it,

Checked the oil, its good. Coolant levels and temps are all good as well. No recent work on it and no sudden temp changes.

it has 129,000 on it. It's cold in michigan, but it happened randomly after I felt a "bump" on my way to work.

I had one of those analysis done, like from autozone, and no error codes.

The clue is you hit a bump? Now look and see what was damaged. Roads suk where I am too not quite as cold (MA-inland) as all of MI. Parts fall off of vehicles are in roads you don't see too + hit things.
Fuel issues? A seriously bent or pinched line? No codes so far a good thing but still a 1,000 other things that don't throw codes the knock/tapping suggest low oil delivery to me - a guess.
Try this: Check it when sitting, level spot and not run. Again when run if too high a viscosity it can't return to oil pan fast would read way too low it can only drip back to oil pan to do the rounds again.

A guess - wrong oil for the cold weather just a chance? Damage if real is not good but should have show RED warning of oil pressure in an icon,

Re: Weird noises in park.. Car is loud and 'tapping' when driving too Sign In

I don't think I hit a bump, but whatever the bump was, it seemed to come from the front end/engine. My "oil change" light came on about a week ago... and this event happened two days ago. The light may/may not be related because I did have my oil change less than 3,000 miles ago. I think the light did not get reset.

I will try to upload a video of how my vehicle sounds. As of now, my oil pressures are good and my fluid temps are good as well. I notice a weird "airplane" like sound when the car downshifts when coming to a stop. Very interesting.. I feel like if this was a huge maintenance repair, the car would have consistent symptoms. But like I said, the symptoms disappeared the other day after driving home from work.

I will check my oil levels again. Two days ago my oil levels seemed fine, but I dont think my car was completely level which could effect the oil reading.

OK: They didn't reset oil change reminder - 3,000 is enough anyway for many. You can't know oil pressure without reading it with a gauge where the sender is.
Other things to check? Take a stick (fans can turn on) and see if cooling fan(s) spin easily for radiator could be the "airplane" noise?

If not working and even cold out need to.
If overheating and coolant boiling your heater will not work a good sign of overheating.

Belts should be checked if snug enough. Better if removed and spin items by hand how they turn with belt off.

This started with a noise unknown why I'm suggesting all clues of where the problem is. It matters noises are the warning (late) the car can't just tell you on the dash what's wrong all the time.
Stinks but don't wait unknown if this is ruining your engine or what's going on.

Here - MA I said. Roads are covered with debris, fallen off plastic junk like air damns/spoilers direct air thru grills don't fare well with snow banks like concrete folks just drive right over them - wrong,

Re: Weird noises in park.. Car is loud and 'tapping' when driving too Sign In

I am having a mechanic take a look at my car in a few days.

What I found out is... the tapping noise is not coming from the engine itself, but from under the engine more on the passenger's side. I took a picture of the area I think the noise is coming from. Maybe my transmission?

Tell me if this link works.

No show for me either. However saying it's under the car now check the heat shields for exhaust this is a monster engine for current cars IDK it personally (another though) should need thin metal covering over exhaust and converter. Easy find - cold engine just tap on known exhaust parts if a spot weld gave out it will rattle away for you and grab it make it shut up - that would prove the item to fix. If so how is just how it's broken or a rusted out spot weld very common just older than this usually,

This should work. I had to crop the image quite a bit.

Yes, I can see it now but it's not really any help. The picture is just the area below the engine. I don't know what could have torn up that plastic cover like that. It looks like the damage came from the side, not forward as it would be if you ran over something.

PS; I made your image show up in your reply but you need to reduce the size of it by at least 50%

That is easy to do at our hosting window.

Right. Regardless that's where the noise is coming from. That spot is right under the engine, which is probably right under the transmission as well

I think it rules out an engine misfire or a shaft problem, however

Follow the rust stain UP would be exhaust items? The rack and pinion would make noise if you could shake that around by hand looks fine not the way to know.

If this will make the noise and you are sick of this with it up in the air overheat bet a tech would peg it in seconds. It's hard to get a good view IDK how high you can get the thing to even look?

Tom
(EDIT!) OMG, I didn't scroll right 1st look. That's all damaged junk there to the right from something the car drove over you or who knows if others use it but said you'd just got gas IDK if you drove the 20 miles right away or takes a while.

Clear damage IMO the fix unknown till that's all removed with new stuff ready,

Tom

How much smaller would you like the picture reduced to?

It's painful HT let it go if you can't see to the right IDK why. It's wrecks the thread now a second, third look NOT sure it's from this car maybe that road debris from who knows what? It doesn't belong there no matter what,

That's good enough. We don't have to keep scrolling to the right to read lines.
