Volvo bus breather tube?

Okay, well, first of all, I'm a young lady, and I know nothing about mechanics. But I use public transport (buses). I caught the bus last week and I could smell something inside that I can only describe as smelling like oil/diesel fumes. Possibly coming through the aircon vents?
I called the bus company to report it. When I called to follow up, the man said the mechanic found that and I quote "the small plastic breather tube (overflow tube) near the fuel tank at the top of the bus came off."
I didn't know there was a fuel tank at the top of the bus.
I've tried to figure out what this is on google. Is he talking about the one on the crankcase and if not, what is he talking about? Is he talking about the fuel tank vent tube?
In any case, why was the smell coming inside of the bus? And what was it that I was breathing?
This link is a photo of the type of bus it is since I know nothing about its info. All I know is that it's possibly a Volvo.

I don't know why you are asking about this. Not sure what make it is even though it says so. You reported it, they found it, fixed it so other than it being annoying to you personally you should be done with it - it's theirs to tend to.........

No, I'm the one who had to breathe in dangerous fumes. Why should I be done with it?
It's not just "annoying".

Unless you are planning on fixing their bus for them, you need to address these questions to the bus company. We have no info here.
