Bought a used 2002 4 cylinder toyota camry from a car lot, and after I drove the car home and parked it some white smoke came from the back of the engine. I took it in and they said it was probably oil (sprayed it off and sent me packing). It's never smoked as much as the first time though. It still smells like burning rubber after I park my car and there's a tiny bit of white smoke that still comes from the back. I took it in again and the mechanic said that there's air flow when the car is moving, so when it stops the steam gets released, but I said it smelled like burning rubber and he was thinking I was being paranoid and gun shy. I think it's a crock of bull, and i don't think cars are supposed to steam, smoke, or smell like burning rubber whenever you park. Am I right? Should I go back and make him check something, and if so, what? There are no visible leaks and it passed their whatever point safety inspection. All fluids are still full. What should I do?

If the engine had an oil leak, simply spraying it off doesn't fix the leak. The leak needs to be found and repaired. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Well it's NOT normal and just washing it means little. Used car from a used car place noted. Many will detail the heck out of a car and go nuts to clean an engine for appearance so the rubber smell may be from that but dissipate. There's something leaking and if they have any warranty on this car get this fixed if you have to get an outside opinion on just what this is. Could be simple or something extensive and you need to know. Late now but when buying used get the vehicle checked out by another shop and tech not associated with the seller. If they don't allow that, move on, T
