Toyota Camry '04 Engine Getting Weak Sign In

2004
Toyota
Camry (LE)
2.4L
approx. 98,000 KM

A day ago, my brother was driving to work when the car battery apparently died. He ended up getting the car to run again after getting a jumpstart from a tow truck driver who happened to be around. Next day, the car wouldn't start so my dad bought a brand new battery pack to replace the old one and then we were able to get the car started.

However, when we checked under the hood while the car was running, the engine appeared to be "weak". The engine belt kept going fast then slow when it sat idle (meaning we didn't step on accelerator or anything). It sounded normal when we revved the engine, but when we let it idle again the engine started running even slower. To me, it looked as if the engine was about to die out any second. My dad claimed that it did die, but I'm not sure if it really did because it kept going although it didn't spin quite strongly (I have no knowledge in car mechanics). I don't know if what I saw was normal because I've never seen under the hood until this day. My dad says there is definitely a engine problem but he doesn't know what's wrong.

The towtruck driver from yesterday said that if the car did not start again after, there could be a problem with the alternator although I don't know if he was trying to get money out of us or if he was being serious.

We really would like some help on this matter as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Well since you were having battery troubles. Then next logical step would be to have the charging system checked to make sure it the alternator is charging...

Get a voltmeter and measure the battery voltage with the engine off.....should be in the 12v range. Start the engine and take another reading. It should be in the 14v range. If it's still in the 12v range, you have a charging problem...

I'm trying to figure out how a tow truck driver could get extra money out of you by suggesting to check your alternator????
