Hi all.

I have a reasonable new starter motor in my car (81 Corolla 4KC motor). The battery is definitely charged up and in good order, have tested with a multimeter.

When I turn the key I just get clicking, from the solenoid, but the engine wont' kick over.

I have pulled out the starter motor and connected it up to the battery with some jumper leads. It turns over fine. BUT, when I put it back in and try to start the car again the starter motor just clicks (solenoid kicking over).

I pulled the starter out again, pulled it apart, gave it a clean and all the bushes are near new looking.

I'm thinking this is an engine issue in terms of some kind of resistance to the starter motor kicking it over but thats just a guess.

Does this ring a bell? I'm lost on this one.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

If you suspect an engine issue, then just get a socket and breaker bar and try to turn the engine over by hand using the crankshaft bolt. If you can't move it that way, then it's time to look for a new engine or whole new car. If you can move it that way, the you likely have a electrical connection issue somewhere.

Does turn over fine (with a socket), I suspect an electrical issue, finding it is a bit of a mystery though.
Still lookin.

Are you hearing one solid click or a series of fast repeating clicks?

It's a series of fast repeating clicks.
I pulled out the starter motor and connected it up to the battery and it turned over fine so you may have hit the nail on the head with the electrical issue.

Do you have another idea of what it could be?

You have a bad connection, probably at one of the battery cables. or the battery just doesn't have sufficient power.

Hmm. Mystery.
The battery is putting out 12.5 volts. I pulled the starter motor out, pulled it apart, cleaned it. Cleaned and tested all the connections. Tested directly off the car battery and the gear thrusts forward and spins like it should.

Checked all the battery cables. Pulled out and cleaned the Alternator and cleaned it's connects.
Cables are good and I can see my ugly face in the battery terminals now, that clean.

One thing this has done is the clicking is not twice as fast. Really pumps out a current to the solenoid.

When I do find it I'm going to know every inch of the car.

Try jumping the cable terminal to the small terminal at the starter. If it doesn't crank that way, you still have a connection problem somewhere or a dead battery.
