SUDDEN RING FAILURE ON 2005 NISSAN	Sign In

A local Nissan dealer just told a lady friend that her 2005 V-6 w/96000 miles had suddenly begun to burn oil at a high rate because the catalytic converters were disintegrating. They claimed that when she went downhill and lifted her foot the pieces were being drawn up into the combustion chamber causing the sudden ring failure. They’d done all of her service work since purchase - so she believed them.
I need some replies to help her see the light.

Common problem with Nissan and baby catalyst. Some Nissans, such as the Pathfinders and Xterra with the 4.0L, have the primary cats as part of the manifold close up to the engine. They designed them like that so the cats heat up quicker to reduce emissions. Problem is when the cat's substrate comes apart, it gets sucked up into the cylinders during valve overlap and sands the rings and cylinder down causing increased oil consumption.
