Nissan Micra (March) 2002, 1.2, 60k miles, Overheating issue / water loss Sign In

Hi all!

Really hope someone can help me out here,

My Japanese Imported Nissan Micra 2002, 1.2, done 60k miles, cambelt changed etc, was all in good condition. but it suddenly started to overheat (red temperature light would come on) ONLY after a long 45 minute drive and ONLY when car was Idle (stopped in traffic) it would never come on while i was driving.

This happened a few times and I was on my way to the garage to get it checked (45 minute drive) when suddenly, half way through the red temp light came on for the first time while driving at 60/70mph which is where i panicked, so i pulled up for a bit to let it cool. (was too stupid to check the water at this point) I had no choice but to drive to my destination and carried on going slowly and I was about a mile from the garage where the car halted to a stop without my control. This is where I called the previous car owner (a friend) and he came. we checked for water and there was NONE, so we filled it up with water and the car was good to go again, but now the Orange engine light came on. we slowly drove the mile to the garage. The garage told us the Thermostat had jammed, so we bought an aftermarket thermostat and they replaced it and the car was okay, but then the garage told us the headgasket is also gone.

before i pay a good £500, i wanted to make sure the headgasket had actually gone, so I went to a few friends who know their stuff and they had a good look and were unsure if the headgasket had gone. One of them did the whole put water in the radiator and put foot on the gas to look for bubbles thing, and no bubbles were shown. The water & oil haven't mixed as there is no mayo like substance anywhere. also there is no water coming out of the exhaust pipe. so i carried on driving it for a week and it was all looking fine to begin with, after a week, the red temperature light came on again. I went to my friend again and we checked the water and again there wasn't much in it... so the water is going down very quick... but he said something about airlocks (sorry i'm not very mechanicly minded as you can see) and maybe that had caused the waterloss so i've been advised to top it up with water every morning and see if the waterloss stops. it's been 2 days since topping up and it hasn't overheated and taken about half a pint of water. also when they were looking at my car, they were touching the pipes and saying "the pressure seems okay"..

Another thing i've noticed is that my heater is off but warm air is coming out when i'm driving? and my fuel economy has decreased it seems, petrols going down quicker than usual... does it sound like the headgasket has gone? any other checks that I can do myself? any advice?!?!

Thank you for taking time to read and i look forward to your replys

Of course you had a choice and you made the choice to destroy your motor. That's what they make tow trucks for. I would be surprised if it was only a head gasket. I would expect a lot more serious damage than that if you drove it until it stopped on it's own.

Thanks for you reply,
Yes i understand it was pretty stupid to do that now and didn't really know the damages it could cause. What else could have been damaged?

Wouldn't those light up the orange engine light? (this light is not coming on anymore - only came on for the 1 mile from where the car stopped to the garage) and the car is driving around fine now as it seems, its just losing water quickly and overheats when theres not much water in it.

I can't diagnose your car from the other side of the ocean but judging by the trauma the engine has gone through, my expectations would be very low. Even though a shop may be able to confirm head gasket damage, they cannot tell you the extent of further damage to the lower end without repairing the head first so it's a judgement call on whether to waste a lot of money trying to fix something that may not be able to be fixed. I'd be looking for a new motor.

Okay, Thank you for your time again.

The problem here is money for me and this was my first car so i've just gotta take it as a lesson learnt. i'm going to drive it around for a few more days as advised by my friend and analyse how much water its losing. if it carries on then I got no choice but to try and get it fixed as I cant afford a new engine.. (can hardly afford the repair..)

will update on what will happen for others who are finding this thread from google and having similar issues.

Thanks again hammer time

That could be another mistake likened to the one that put you in this position in the first place. The risk you are taking is that you spend all this money to repair the head and in the end, you still need a new engine. You might as well have thrown the money out the window.

What do you reckon then? Part exchange? or a new engine?how much would a new engine + labour cost?

I'm on the other side of the ocean and we don't even have that car here. You need to find these things out locally. A low mileage used engine may be the best option.
