LDV Convoy, 2.5 Di, starter motor issues Sign In

Hi, recently bought an LDV Convoy, 2001, with the 2.5 Di engine. I don't know much about mechanics but trying to learn as I go so expertise is appreciated.
Drove to the shop and when came back turned the ignition and the engine didn't come on but heard a whirring sound.
Checked it out and the sound was coming from the starter motor but the whirring sound then started to continue after switching off the ignition.

I have done the following tests and now am a little confused;
-charged up the battery as appeared to be dead
-checked voltage across it and is normal
-connected back to starter motor which fired straight away but the engine wasn't coming on. Disconnected battery
-disconnected ignition connection to connector on solenoid then re-connected the battery. The starter motor started up again. Checked voltage across battery to solenoid connection and correct voltage
-removed the starter motor
-hooked negative up to the back earth plate and then connected the positive to the battery connection. Fired up immediately and the pinion gear at the back was spinning rapidly

Had a read and I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the solenoid in that the iron rod isn't going back to its resting position so keeping the circuit from the battery to the starter motor connected. But not sure if this happens ever? This may explain why it drained the battery but I don't understand why if the pinion gear is spinning why this wouldn't start the engine.

I've also read about troubles with the dual mass flywheel in the 2.4 duratorq engine clogging up the starter motor but struggled to determine whether the flywheel in mine is likely to be a dual mass one. As the flywheel is now slightly visible is there an easy way to check?

Any advice would be sound

This vehicle not sold to the US that I know of but doesn't matter. If "starter drive" (you call a pinion gear which is understood) throws out to flywheel and turns engine but doesn't retract power would still be going thru starter. If it doesn't turn the engine but makes noise of a starter motor turning alone that's another issue.

Not certain what you mean is happening?

By the way - just voltage is helpful but not complete information on it a battery has the power to start an engine so you know. It is possible for it to try and not retract or teeth are missing from flywheel but since it seems to drain the battery more likely the starter has the problem but know what power it is getting. If not retracting it probably got too hot from trying or a low power of a battery so was a problem caused by a weak battery and failed solenoid?

Unsure of exactly what is happening to you so inconclusive,

T

Happy to help where I or we can in any way. Sorry for the double post above - I'll remove that, problem with this site.

I just need to know if engine is actually turning or a noise only and I or we can help you.

Refresh: It's my understanding this site is listed on overseas searches so not just " US, American." The problem is most of us are in the US so specific details are not available to us - not your fault.

This problem seems general to almost any electric start engine so checks would be the same for just this part,

Tom
