If I do not flush the coolant periodically, what will happen?

Is it enough to always watch the temperature of the engine via the dashboard gauge to make sure I don't overheat? Or will something bad happen if I never flush the coolant?

I drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla with over 100,000 miles. I drive less than 7,500 miles per year. Going into the winter, I do not think I will be at risk for overheating.

Overheating is not your concern unless you have diluted the coolant.

The additives put into the coolants wear out and bad things will start happening to your cooling system.

It's really not about overheat but a Hammer Time said it's about getting fresh additive.

Opinion on my part. Flushing shouldn't be necessary rather just totally drained and refilled with new and proper rated antifreeze and more say distilled water on a time and miles basis.

The opinion is by the time a flush gives you junk or muck coming out or needed to get out it's already sustained problems for you yet to happen. The freeze protection stays, the additives wear out. Those additive do a lot for protecting against corrosion, foaming and lubrication of a water pump's shaft seal.

Please take real notice that almost all antifreezes used are very toxic and harmful. Read container if doing this yourself and know how and where you can properly dispose of it,

You mentioned distilled water in the coolant system ,I said that to someone and they said instantly "you don't want to do that" never got a chance to ask him why , can you elaborate ? I would think "things" would be picked up by the water ,the way it is and all ,ionized ,or what ever .

Just on distilled water: It's pure H20 - water. Nothing else in it. Tap water could be fine as other water but you aren't sure what's in it that might be faster to harm something or react with metals and additives in coolant.
Other water probably already picked up something and can pick up more until it's mud. Just saying with all things about "water" distilled is starting with plain water, no flavor, not metals, no anything you don't want,
