Hi all! I have an 07 Honda CRV. The engine is out of the car and I want to fix this oil leak that's covering the timing cover side and bottom of the engine. It seems to be originating from the bolts that go through the timing cover, but the lower portion of the engine seems wetter than the upper, especially the plastic CrankSensor connector. Also, the oil stain seems to be above the speculated source. Can oil stains travel up? Has anyone had this problem before? You can check out this video I posted and see what you think.

THANKS!!

Remember one thing. Oil doesn't run up hill. It may have a slight wicking effect to make it seep a short distance but for the most part look for the highest point that you see oil. In this case it looks like the timing cover is leaking where it meets the head.

You mean where that bracket goes through the timing cover? That's the highest point where I see oil. There are two possible origins: where the steel mount bracket meets the aluminum timing cover, and at the bolt head that holds said bracket. Since the bracket is all oily, I'm inclined to believe it's the latter, but how to seal something like that? I can't just make a gasket washer, can I? How do they seal this at the factory?

No, the whole timing cover needs to be removed and re-sealed.

YIKES! it can't just be from those bracket bolts? What's the procedure for sealing something with RTV?

The bracket bolt is leaking from the gasket. The cover has to be removed, the gasket surface totally cleaned and a new gasket installed, and all surfaces sealed.

Ohhhh, you're saying there's a gasket behind the cover where the bolts are... I had no idea... I have never really worked on a timing chain style engine before. Thanks for the hint. Do you think it's a paper gasket, or RTV style?

I'm sure you will be using some RTV but you need to buy the gasket set and see what it consists of. Make sure you get the set so it comes with new crank seal too.
