Head Gasket replacement	Sign In

I have a 1997 ford explorer 4.0 L SOHC 6cyl Does anyone know if it is possible to change the gaskets
without removing the engine I have heard some people say you have to remove the engine
because of difficult to get at rear timing chain

That would be correct. Remove the engine.

You can remove the cylinder heads without removing the engine, but since the timing chain cassettes are probably worn out, you might want to remove the engine and do both timing chains and cassettes.

If it got hot enough to blow the head gaskets, it might be cheaper to find a good used salvage yard engine.

With DS on this one. The book time for the timing chains alone is 22 hours and the chain set is over $500. Throw in a full head gasket set and machine shop costs and you could find a good used engine no problem.
