Golf GTI 1997 Engine Cutting Out HELP NEEDED PLEASE Sign In

Hi Everyone, any help here would be much appreciated!

I Have a 1997 Golf GTI (R reg) and recently it has been cutting out on me while I drive. I've tried narrowing down when this happens and it tends to be when I'm either slowing down, driving slow or when the revs are generally just low..!

I've done some homework and several suggestions keep re-occurring. These are that it could be the throttle body or the idle control valve? But now I need some expert advice which is hopefully where you'll come in =)

Now I'm not at all mechanically minded sadly but was wondering if there was any prechecks I could make to help diagnose the issue before getting some one to look at the car (to help try and keep the cost down!!)

Like I said, ANY help would be greatly appreciated, and if there's anything you think I've missed out just drop me a message and I'll try and answer it as soon as possible..!

Thanks very much in advance =D

All that detail and still no engine size.

That is a "Drive by Wire" throttle system with an electronic actuator. That would take some very advanced diagnostic equipment to determine any failure there. I would really question whether the throttle has anything to do with your problem at all.
This could be something like a Crank sensor or any number of other possibilities. You might want to check for any stored trouble codes first.

Thanks for that HammerTime, but just out of curiosity is there a particular reason why you believe it isn't the throttle body or idle valve..? (This is just from what I read on other forums and I thought my situation was similar) Have you had previous experiences with this kind of intermittent problem or are you just telling me all the possible things it could be..??

I should also note to everyone that I tried starting my car today after leaving it parked (for two weeks or so) and there was no fuel injection as I turned the key 3/4 of the way, thus the car didn't start! This is normally what happens JUST after the car cuts out, but would normally work again after several minutes if left.... However this morning is the first time that it hasn't started from the beginning and no matter how long I left it, it wouldn't start =s

That's not the way diagnostics work. What is the reason that you believe it is a throttle problem?

I guess you thought this information wasn't important enough to be in your question.
I think the throttle is even less likely now.

Apologies, but like I said I'm not very mechanically minded and I'm trying to decipher what info would be useful to you and what wouldn't, hence why I'm on here asking for help from someone who knows their stuff..!

With that extra information then, does it narrow the fault down at all or simply eliminate the chance of it bring the throttle..?

The car needs to be properly diagnosed by a technician with the proper equipment. There's only so much that can be determined without even seeing a car.

See if this helps. It's what we have to resort to in cases like this.
