Ford Ranger 2.3L 1995 about 200000 miles

Well the timing belt broke on it. I was not driving fast, actually almost to a dead stop when the belt broke. Mechanic replaced it and no it has no power when driving and the idle is very, very, rough. Engine stalls when air con is on. Mechanic seems to think the valves got damaged but when revved it is smooth. Does not backfire just does not respond to gas when pedal pushed. Could it be belt was not put in properly??

If the belt is off a few teeth, it will run like a bag of poop. 2.3L isn't considered an interference engine, so you shouldn't have any bent valves.

What do you mean by interference engine?

Engines with timing belts are classified as either interference or freewheeling. On an interference motor, the valves can go down further than the point of the piston at the uppermost limit of its travel. So if the belt snaps and the crank is still moving, the valves will be sticking down and collide with the piston. It will bend the valves and the head will have to be rebuilt or replaced. In some cases it can do piston damage and the engine will need to be replaced. The engine you have is freewheeling, and that means that the valves to not enter the chamber far enough to collide with the piston even if the engine is turned with a broken timing belt. So if the belt breaks, as you ran into, you can just roll everything back to its timing marks and slap on a new belt. The internal hard parts of your engine will not suffer damage thanks to that.

Thanks that is good to know. That tells me a lot about my mechanic. He first told me maybe the valve might be bent and he wanted to open up my motor. I just didn't think it was so. Again, thanks.

On a different motor he could have been completely right but he should have known that this wasn't one of them. Besides, there are simple ways to test for valve damage without tearing the engine apart.

Just found out that there is a tensioner for the timing belt. Could it be that the tensioner is bad or weak and the belt is running loose?? Expert opinions please.

A bad tensioner is a total belt failure and should have been looked at when the belt was changed. Take a compression test if you want to find out if the belt is the issue.

Got it fixed. How's this guys? Mechanic said auto store gave him the wrong belt for my Ranger, said should have been for a Mazda B3000 pickup?? Regardless, I brought the tensioner for him to replace and after he exchanged the belt and installed the tensioner, purring like a kitten. This sound right?

That's kind of odd because a Mazda B3000 uses a timing chain.

What worries me is that I don't see the related components on the list. When you replace a timing belt, everything that touches it except the crank and cam should go in the dumpster. The idler pulleys, tensioner and if the water pump drives from it put that on the list too. They often can be purchased as a kit because of this. If one of those components breaks later, the truck is on a wrecker and you are paying the labor all over again. If this guy doesn't know that, he isn't doing a very professional job and I wouldn't recommend using his services again.

Nothing is wrong with my vehicle but I have a question concerning a miss-aligned timing belt-I know if it is off a tooth or so you will get different or lower vacuum readings but I was wondering if you would be able to realize it is a miss-aligned belt by the base timing if just using cranking speed would the base timing be off ( you would be able to see base timing on a scanner or with a timing light ) it seems if the crank shaft was off by a little you would be able to see some difference in the base timing. I was just asking this to know of another way to tell if the problem was a miss-aligned belt instead of manually having to take the timing covers off

The crankshaft can never be off.

Hey i know its been since 2012 since this post was made but i have a 95 Mazda B2300 extended cab. i know its pretty much the same as a Ford ranger. this is more a question than an answer.
I had a cracked head. Replace it.
replace spark plugs, wires, timing belt, EGR, IAC, TPS, crank sensor. another sensor just under the power steering, Coil pack, fuel pump and Filter, oil Pressure switch. Mass Airflow sensor. Fuel pressure regulator and injectors. and vacuum lines. none have holes in them. the truck still runs like it is skipping. it also has loss of power but no knocks or leaks. it has good compression. runs for about 15-20 min then shuts off basically like it chokes its self out. spits and sputters then dies. anything else anyone can think of would be greatly appreciated.
