Last week, doing my pre-check, I noticed my coolant level was almost 1 gallon low (never low). I then noticed the green tint to the oil. I did notice a coolant smell from the breather. I immediately changed the oil and filter. Still can smell coolant lightly from the breather, but an oil change doesn't get all of the oil out. What would cause this? Head gasket? The truck is running and sounds great. Exhaust looks good, no white. There are no leaks under the truck. There is NO oil in the coolant, so should rule out oil cooler. If not the head gasket, could the air compressor leak coolant into the oil? Please give me your thoughts and I will continue to monitor as I need to use the truck this week.

A head gasket could do it, so could a cracked head. Your air compressor is also a way it could get in there if it has coolant hoses going into it. The exhaust will only be white if you are leaking coolant to the combustion chambers. If a gasket is damaged between the oil ports and coolant ports you would get contaminated oil. Going to have to isolate the source. One thing you could try is to get a pressure tester on it. The ones that use compressed air and a regulator work great for this, as you can keep the pressure up on a leaking system. Unhook the compressor oil return line and see if you get any coolant to come out of it. If you are able to rule out the compressor you may need to drop the oil pan and watch for where coolant is leaking down. Sometimes a black light will help, as most coolants will show up quite well under that.
