Car has trouble starting, then dies, exhaust smells like gas Sign In

Hey everyone, I‘m new to this forum because I had a recent problem with my car. I‘m a woman who doesn‘t know a whole lot about cars but I will do my best to answer if you need any additional information!

I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire which started acting up last week for the first time. I was in a parking lot and the car was cranking but wouldn’t start until I tried again. After that, it was running fine for a week. Today I wanted to leave my house and the car would crank again and then start after the third try but would die after maybe 30 seconds. After that I started it again and it would run normal but I noticed a strong gas smell from the vehicle’s exhaust.

I can’t find any gas leaks, just some condensed water leaking from just behind the muffler where it connects to the exhaust pipe, had fuel pump, filter, spark plugs and wires replaced maybe 8 months ago.

Could it be my fuel injector failing me? Also, do you think I could try and drive the mile to the mechanic without getting stuck on the road?

Thanks in advance to anyone who makes an effort to reply!

This isn't something you are going to get an instant diagnosis for. It's going to require some testing.

The first thing you need to test is the fuel pressure.

See what the pressure is and how long it holds after the key is turned off.
