Car Has Trouble Starting Sign In

I own a Ford Focus 2003. I've been having an intermittent issue where the car would almost start for a moment and then die immediately. I'd have to wait a while until the car decides to start like it should. Any idea what this is and how to fix it? If any extra info is needed, just say so, please. Thanks for helping me!

Which engine? automatic or manual? Check engine light on? If so, which trouble code(s) number is stored?

It's the 2.0 engine, automatic, and the check engine light is NOT on.

Is this DOHC or SOHC?

Re: Car accelerates by itself Sign In

I replaced the throttle position sensor. Now I have a new problem: the motor now increases the RPM by itself without me pushing the gas pedal, especially when I'm driving at more than 40MPH.

Anyways, anything helps. Thanks!

EDIT: DOHC Engine

Does the engine have a high idle speed?

No, it doesn't. It has a low idle speed.

Since last time I put the old idle control valve back.. Now, I have the original problem again, where it wouldn't start for 30 or 40 minutes at a time.

It seems to happen more often when I do something intensive such as start it and turn it off a few times.

If you keep your foot on the accelerator, can you keep it running when it tries to die? Or if you hold the accelerator down 1/4 the way, will the engine start right up?

Yes, if I keep pressing the gas pedal as I attempt to start the car I can keep it somewhat alive. As soon as I release the gas, however, the car dies immediately.

So you can keep the vehicle running if you keep your foot on the accelerator? Maybe the replacement IAC was defective. Have you installed another?

Did your replacement IAC look the same as the original? Did you replace the gasket also?

Re: Car accelerates by itself Sign In

No, I had returned the original idle control, I ended up cleaning it as well. It doesn't happen all that often, but it does happen every so often (with the original idle control valve), seems to particularly happen when the engine is being used intensively (ie being turned on and off).

When I replaced it with the new idle control valve I did indeed replace the gasket, and that replacement gasket is still there.

Could it be an air leak? Sometimes I can hear a very faint whistle when I go at about 40 (disappears after I go faster) that decreases in pitch.
