Accord Stalling or Not Starting Sign In

2008 Honda Accord with 2.4L 4cyl engine and 220,000 miles. Car is stalling randomly or not starting. Drove 35 miles to work a few weeks ago and about 5 miles into my drive home, the car lost power while accelerating to about 50 mph. Pulled to the side, restarted the car and it stalled again soon after accelerating. Did this about 4 times before I was able to start it and drive the rest of the way home (about 30 miles). Each time it stalled, the engine, VSA, "!" and green key (immobilizer) lights would come on. The next day in the garage, the car would crank but not start or start and then stall about 5 seconds after starting. I had the error codes read: P060A,P1659, P060A, P1659 and P0498. I checked the fuses/relays and they seem fine. I replaced the Accelerator Position Sensor and no change. I have wiggled the ignition/key and it does not cause the car to stall. Also, I can no longer deactivate the VSA system (e.g., hold VSA button to turn system off). I've been searching the internet and haven't found anything that describes the same problem or a fix. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Accord Stalling or Not Starting Sign In

The P0498 is an emissions fault so don't worry about that right now.

The other 2 codes could indicate more than one problem.

The P1659 is for the ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) relay. A new relay MAY solve that problem.

The P060A is more serious. That is an internal failure to the PCM and will likely mean a new PCM.

I've been reading about the PCM and finding conflicting info. If I were to purchase a used PCM to replace mine, would I need to take it to a dealership to have it programmed or could I just swap out the PCM?

I can't tell you positively but I think it would need to be programmed, not necessarily by the dealer though. Many independent shops have that capability now. You would have to call around to ask.

I believe at the very least it would require key programming and possibly a complete flash as the VIN has to be programmed in.

Some of the older models were plug and play but they have gotten away from that.
You need to ask around before even buying a used one as some makes cannot be programmed to a different vehicle.

Re: Accord Stalling or Not Starting Sign In

Sorry for all of the questions -- just trying to troubleshoot this. I tried replacing the accelerator/accelerator position sensor, but that made no difference. That said, the car does seem to be more likely to stall when I step on the accelerator vs. just letting it idle. Also, would the fact that the issue is intermittent suggest anything? For example, if I try starting the car and it only cranks, no matter how long I crank it, it won't start. If I stop and remove the key and then try again, it may start up and then idle fine (forever), until I start messing with the accelerator pedal.

I don't know why on earth you would change the APP. There was nothing that would indicate a failure in that. You already know you have an internal PCM failure so why are you looking at everything else?
