Sounds like it's time to call a tow truck and head for the repair shop. It appears you tacked something that you weren't qualified to do. Who knows what could have gone wrong.

HT may be on the right track here. Major engine work such as this is usually reserved for senior techs. Did you slap a gasket or did you have the heads sent to a machine shop to be surfaced, cleaned and magnafluxed? What did you set base timing at? If what I ask is greek to you, you are learning an expensive lesson and have opened Pandora's Box mechanically. Send it to the pros and consider it an expensive lesson or up your game and learn the proper way to do it with the proper tools in the proper environment.

That's not possible but I'll bet the Cam/crank offset is FUBAR

Very well may be the case. I'm thinking of my truck myself which is a 95 TBI and therefore not Vortec. Something is amiss and not sure if this can be diagnosed by him but wanted to ask a few questions to confirm.

Wouldn't even know where to start on this one. He could have screwed up most anything or everything.

If this is a chiltons or Haynes manual you might as well throw that in the trash if your using that to troubleshoot. If it is the service manual, there is a section in 8A that has no start and tells you what to check.

I'd personally start by running a compression test with the battery fully charged. Make sure you don't have valves hanging open or some other mechanical wackiness going on.

If the compression is good, check for spark and fuel pressure. Something is going to be missing. Many times the distributor is incorrectly indexed when it is installed. Make sure your ground strap is bolted to the back of the passenger side head and the computer/sensor ground wire is on the thermostat housing stud.

No, you didn't. The timing isn't even adjustable.

Well, if it is too far off that should illuminate the check engine light, unless the light is already on for something else. Nothing like driving a gas hog with out of phase injector sync.

Yes, the rockers have to be set correctly and should have been before the engine was even run. The distributor also has to be set correctly and that requires the use of a professional scan tool. If you don't, then the primary and secondary ignition will be out of synch with each other and the injectors will be also.

Better make sure you don't have the valves adjusted too tight or you'll burn some valves.

TechForFree, if you had read the postings above from myself, DS and Hammer you would've seen that this was a subject already well covered. As it is, its been over a week and a half since anything new has been mentioned from the owner and I'm sure if he had further questions he would've posted them.
