97 LGT problems idling

97 LGT problems idling Sign In

I own a 97 legacy gt and I recently removed the air filter for inspection and put STP gas treatment in and right afterwards I started my car and it will not idle. It drops to like 2-300 rpms and sputters, and somtimes stalls. The car is throwing codes for bad o2, knock, and speed sensors, and a misfire in cylinder 3&4. I know the o2 sensor could cause this but coincidently seconds after messing with air filter? Somone said to check and make sure that I didn't knock any vaccum lines loose. They all seem to be there. Haven't tested for a leak yet though, but I don't hear any hissing. The wires are new, but not sure about the plugs. I'll replace those and hope that fixes the misfire. What could I have managed to messed up to cause this? Or any input would help.

No, it's not. The computer cannot tell you if a component is bad or not. It merely tells you there is an issue with the related circuit, not necessarily the sensor itself, especially the 0/2 codes. There are dozens of different 0/2 related codes that all mean different things. Post the exact code numbers here.

Go back and check your work and look for the damaged or left off hose or wiring left unplugged.

I'll get the codes, it was related to the issues stated not exactly "bad". But I did check the o2 sensor with meter and it's bad. I would like help assessing those issues, but I did find out it was a vaccum leak causing my problem. A dime sized cap plug looking thing came out from the underside of air filter assembly. For the speed sensor code, I found the sensor ànd it's plugged in so it's probably faulty. Thanks for the reply.

I believe by what looked like a ohms meter but I'd have to ask, I'm having Somone help me with the issue as I'm not mechanical savvy as you can probably tell. Haha. I'll get back to you with the codes and what he used to check sensor.

You sure you didn't rip the intake ducting playing around with the air filter or forgot to connect intake vents? Anything that affects the airflow through the MAF sensor can cause stalling, misfiring, and O2 codes to pop up. Also look up inside the sensor and make sure leaves or trash didn't get up into the sensor. It just doesn't make any sense that all this that started right after you inspected an air filter is being caused by faulty oxygen sensors.
