Have been getting a clicking sound at times when try to start car (96 toyota corolla automatic transmission w/ about 91k miles) since late june. mechanic said: charging system was normal; was fully charged when engine off;fully charged when engine on & lights on; state of health was about 1/2 indicating there was a battery problem; 3 yr old battery had 486 cold cranking amps; he advised possibly bad cell in battery & to replace it. I replaced battery & car ran ok for about 2 wks then got clicking sound again when trying to start car.

Took car to different shop & mechanic said charging system was normal; diode ripple was normal; load off was 13.87 v; load on was 13.9 v; cold cranking amps were good at 576; & during start up everything tested normal. Mechanic thought there may be a loose connection on the starter & raised the car to look underneath & said starter & solenoid both had tight connections. Some days car starts up fine, other days it takes 3 or 4 tries to get it to turn over. once it only started when put in neutral. battery posts & terminals were cleaned, distributor cap looked dry inside & didn't see cracks, alternator belt tight & looks ok, lights came on the the dashboard & the wipers ran at fairly normal speed when I turned on the key w/out trying to start car. What's up with this car? Could it be bad battery cables & how would I check if there's a problem w/ them? The starter & solenoid would be a bear to pull out from underneath. Thanks

in response to your question, i believe it is like 1 click, not particularly fast click. could it be the battery cable or ground? if so, how would i test them? thanks
