Somehow I know I'll be wrong but recall '96 Vortec's need 60-66 PSI to stay running well or start. Have watched them drop below 58 by memory and engines stall, run poorly and much lower won't run. Fuel pump quality varies and if run dry or low level new can be junk in no time. Codes can mislead when engine doesn't run well for lack of proper fuel delivery for any reason and you have one, Double check that but think that's right, T

Sorry for second post. Check battery as well. If it's not strong or delivers correct voltage/amps while under load of cranking it too can cause low fuel pressure. Never witness battery voltage lower than 9V at worse while cranking or trouble there, T

lets do a quick look at MAF KOEO is there 12v pink wire ? is blk wire a good ground? let us know.... THe engine run @2 seconds Has me thinking the fuel pump relay is timing out - no CKP signal. Does the oil pressure gauge work? If applicable does tach work? Might try swapping relays - fuel pump with AC or horn for a test, How is your electrical skills - looking at relay terminals and cavities - maybe jumping relay OR can you see the red fuel pump prime connector?

All data flow chart says 60psi when key on for 2 sec last time I replaced fuel pump it showed 60 psi when new ( don't remember the cranking psi ) I too have seen 60-66 in a few articles The 2 prior fuel pumps would run the vehicle after using starter fluid to get going

Here is the spec according to Alldata Central SFI 415 - 455 kPa (60 - 66 psi) You need to determine if you have injector pulse during this problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Guessed right on pressure anyway. About voltage. Yes you can get your 60 PSI for starting and should be running so quickly the alternator then is the running voltage. Extended cranking or weak power drops below limits and pump can't maintain the minimum now even with starting fluid so it's pressure delivered is quite low for this if your reading is accurate also see how it goes up with engine running - it should and not even with starting fluid so points to bad pump for now, T

If it is maintaining 60PSI thoughout, it's not likely a pump problem. Find out about the injector pulse.

It's a little trickier on that engine because you have to locate the right wires but you use a noid light bulb while cranking and it should flash.

I thought the noid light only worked on earlier models The 96 is the start of csfi I think and am unsure where to hook the light ( if even possible) I have ordered a fuel pump on the net because they are no longer in stock at advance etc I know it will be relatively easy to drop the tank since I have done it twice before I will post back to let everyone know Thks Joe Katona

Luckily fuel pump is only 85.00 for aftermarket Pressure while cranking does fall to 55 and possibly 52 The original was Delphi and failed at approx 100thou I put in a Delphi and it lasted 18 months Third one was an airtex less than 18 months If I can get it rolling and it lasts 18 mos I will likely then be retiring the vehicle I thank all for good input and will post back after install Joe

Why would the pressure drop when cranking? If it hit 60PSI with a 2 second prime, it should have easily maintained when the pump re-engaged cranking, unless it doesn't engage when cranking.
