Hi All,
I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L. About a month ago I brought it in as it was bogging down when I applied the gas. The mechanic told me that my catalytic was blocked and that I needed to replace it along with the front pipe.
I got the car back and guess what; the problem persisted. Now in addition to the bogging when accelerating, I get a loud popping sound. I brought the car back in and they said, well, it must me miss-firing. This did not make a lot of sense to me but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. They insisted that when put on the scope, that they received no error codes.
I received the car back again and of course, my car now sounds like a tractor, it barely accellerates and it still makes the popping noise when I try to give it gas. In addition now the 'check engine' light is flashing periodically. I've looked this up in the manual and it's apparently related to the emmission system.
I'm wondering if this is characteristic of the EGR valve failing? Or possibly the coil causing a miss-fire?
I really don't want to go back to the mechanic as I'm now down $700 and no further ahead. I'm inclined enough to replace the EGR if indeed someone thinks this might be the problem. I am however having a hard time locating it in this car. I have changed them in other cars but perhaps they look different in this one.
I diagram showing where it is would be really helpful. I have been searching but have not been able to find any kind of online diagram or repair information.
Please help!

The EGR system is supposed to be off at idle. EGR - 101 - is supposed to add a touch of exhaust gas to incoming mixture oddly which cools it and reduces the emmision known as Nox at part throttle, It's supposed to be off again at full throttle! They do have a diaphraigm and gasket which can leak along with the valve that is exposed to both exhaust and the incoming mixture. A bad EGR should be causing a rough idle??
An exhaust restriction will show up when the manifold vacuum is not the same at idle and 2,000 RPM. That sounds more like your trouble and needs the two second check for that new converter or not. There are other things that can screw up. Good luck with the fix, - T
Spray your EGR at idle, nothing should happen (use carb cleaner but not too much) --fire hazzard so use good judgment - baking soda would put it out. Not likely but be ready.
