96 Corolla Starts and immediately dies Sign In

Hi, Guys. I have a 96 Corolla 1.6L with 282K miles. All of a sudden the car will start but immediately dies. It will not idle, but I can keep it going and even drive it by giving it gas. The moment I let off the accelerator it dies. I tested the fuel pump for voltage, and it had 12 volts. I can hear it for 2 to 3 seconds when the car is started. I also checked the fuel pressure. It tested good (44psi). Unfortunately, I could not test the pressure while idling because it will not idle. In any case, I believe that the fuel pump is fine. Next, I was going to try to clean the idle air control valve. Does this seem reasonable? What would you check next? Thank you for any advise.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Thanks, Hammer. I cleaned the throttle body and put a new fuel pump and spark plugs. I didn't realize it at the time, but the car actually had the check engine lighted. I went to Autozone and it gave codes P0110 (air intake temp sensor or ECM) and P0120 (throttle position sensor or ECM). While I had the throttle body off I checked the throttle position sensor with a multimeter and the resistance tested within specs and I also measured 5 volts from the ECM. Last night, I tested the air intake temp sensor and it tested good (the resistance changed with temperature). The car will not idle at all when cold, but after driving a bit, it will idle although somewhat lower than normal. Could this be one of the mentioned sensors or the ECM?

Whether or not those things are causing you problems is not the issue here. You need to get those codes resolved, regardless.
