My 95 pontiac transport has a 3.8 engine with about 200,000 miles on it at idle it will surge. Tach needle goes up and down, sometimes on letting up on the gas to breake the engine will stall, or stall at the idle. When in park and the accelerator is pushed down the engine at about half way will lope and back fire. The check engine soon light is also on. Had a mechanic friend come ever and hooked up to the vans computer and said it had a MAF error code. upon his reguest I replaced the fuel regulator valve because he said it was bad because of a gas smell in the vacume line to the unit. that didn't help at all. So replaced the MAF sensor. Also no change.
So now thought I would change the pcv valve. I know where it is supposed to be but can't figure out how to get the little compartment open to remove it. Can any one help with that? Called mechanic friend but won't aswer messages. Guess he doesn't want to explain why spending more than $200 for prts didn't help.

Can anyone help with the PCV valve and have any other ideas as to what may be wrong?
there is also a slight exhaust leak somewhere at the engine area.
thanks

IMO judging from what you've described, you have coil or ESC module problems, or perhaps both. Check each coil for spark output, being extremely careful of the wires. If you get zapped you'll think you've been *****-slapped into next week. I'd remove a plug wire, then start the engine to check for spark. Continue until all coils have been checked. If no problem is found, try a module. It lives under the coils.

I assume no responsibility for the advice posted above. It's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Cool post. Can't imagine these on line cross word puzzles being a problem but hear your defense loud and clear, best, Tom

Thanks. The guy was so unappreciative of his mechanics' efforts I just wanted to forestall a crappy attitude if I'm wrong. Diagnosing problems on the 'net is a SWAG exercise at best.

About the Biz..... Sign In

Way back in the 70s a jerk came in to a gas station garage, called me "boy" and said he wanted his alternator replaced. I did just that and he came back screaming that the car didn't charge the next day. That guy treated me so poorly I just did what he demanded. (ps: I've never done that since and always discuss a problem with a customer and don't deal with jerks)

Next day when he was so ticked I told him I did what he told me to do and added that he didn't ask me to fix the charging problem but just demanded replacing the alternator. I then told him the problem was the voltage regulator, but I was so ticked I didn't care. Yes I fixed it but being treated like that by an Electrical Engineer, to then a lowly mechanic got the better of me. Had he only asked me to fix a charging problem with some respect for my judgement, he would have left with a fixed car.

To add he parked and locked the car, blocking the repair bays AND took keys to nearby work so we had to chase him down!! They say mechanics/techs are the most complained about with the trades. Some may be. Some customers could use some fairness too. This IS a tough biz!! Techs go home tired and exposed to all kinds of dangerous work and products. Be nice to your mechanic, we are NOT out to get you! Tom Greenleaf

Amen Tom, amen. The stories I could tell. Some days it seems as if half the people who come into the shop are paranoid schizo sociopaths. They're so afraid of being ripped off that they won't allow the mechanic to use his experience and know-how to properly repair their problem. I've been doing this since the early 70s too, and have always been honest and forthright with customers. It hasn't done one bit of good. We're still ranked slightly above used car salesmen.

There should be a monument somewhere for all the fair (most) mechanics who have kept people going for decades, usually with little thanks. Amen brother, Tom
