If hoses are off or not working perhaps it filled with too much and became raw fuel and now you smell that burning off of converters which isn't good for them but it all was right that should end and noise be gone. Check for condition of hose and if canister is still wet with fuel. Not really related to the alternator IMO but may have been bumped in changing out alternator?
