1985 Ford Escort 1.6L CVH I4
80,085 miles on it.

So I'm trying to get my car back on it's feet at the moment, my water pump ate my timing belt up and my water pump also broke. I've replaced both, but now my car will turnover and fire up, just not stay started. Help??

Oh, and side question, my heater core needs to be replaced, do I need to fix that immediately or could I put that off till winter?

Thank you!!!!

The SOHC 1.6 is an interference engine meaning that if the engine rotated after the timing changed, it likely bent numerous valves. A compression test would confirm that now.

Would you hear any noise difference if it was that? The car still sounds the same as it tries to start, as well as when it fires? I have a buddy of mine coming to help me time it on Sunday just in case cause I have a feeling it's off time.

Forget heater core for now - as HT said this engine if turned while timing is off never mind broken belt the valves collide with pistons and damage occurs. Total extent you will find out with head off and sent out to machine shop for that fix.

Heater can just make a "U" turn in the hoses to it if this thing ever runs again to worry about heat and driving it.

Would you hear noise now you asked? Well you didn't hear a water pump that was so bad it tore up a belt so who knows on this.

If you take compression you will find it so far off it's proof or a scope to look inside a spark plug hole you could see it.

This and heater core on about a 30 year old Escort is now your call to continue or not as both are work and unknown engine damage till apart,

I did hear my water pump blow, I was driving and I heard something start screeching and pulled over and saw my coolant was just pouring out of the water pump. I'm not a car guy so I understand if I'm either not making sense or not seeming serious. But I'm going to get the chilton for it and have somebody help me time it at least. I'll see if I can get him to help me with checking compression. Thank you guys for your advice though! I didn't know I could have done that to my engine :/

You don't need a manual. I'll take Hammer Time's finding on that this is an 'interference engine' which means you can't turn those by hand or valves hit pistons. Google INTERFERRENCE ENGINE FOR IMAGES IF THIS DOESN'T SHOW. It's not a may it did mess it up IMO. Doesn't matter if you had warning or not it like dropping an egg - it broke.

What happens in this common way to make an engine that is called "interference" and sorry if it doesn't show........

CRASH!

If it is a SOHC it is, if it is a DOHC it isn't.

I only show (lousy for dependable info) that SOHC (4 types) all interference were available? Take compression test anyway as the symptoms are there, T
