2013 Mazda3 Hatchback Engine Light and Black Exhaust Sign In

I was driving on the interstate with my cruise control on when my engine light came on, and I started to lose power. I could not go any faster than 40mph. I pulled off of the road and the check engine light went off a couple of minutes later. I was able to drive home, not on the interstate. This happened two more times, both on the interstate (once while cruise control was on and once while accelerating up to 70mph). The last time this happened, there was a lot of black exhaust. Every time my engine light goes off after sitting idle for a couple of minutes. I don't even have to turn my car off. My dad tried running diagnostics, but there were no codes found. I just bought this car less than 6 months ago, and it only has 36,000 miles on it. Any ideas of what could be wrong?

There have to be codes with that happening. Was this a fixed wreck by any chance? Otherwise why isn't this under drivetrain warranty still even if a second owner?

There were no codes. I had scheduled my car for an oil change today before this happened, and I asked them to check it out. They didn't find any codes either. It was a rental car without any accidents.

Clearly it's delivering way too much fuel and not being able to read codes is now critical. You are already causing substantial damage to it by driving it at all IMO any more. Too new and can't know what your warranty would be on a prior rental car.

Check out your purchase papers and find out what is covered or not on this. If not communicating for codes could be something I don't know of that a rental car company did to track their fleet or who knows?
At the age and miles with this history I really don't know what is best but would be calling with VIN # handy to seller or Mazda dealer at to what to do next. I can't know what your deal included with buying it but if you mess with it yourself and it has a warranty then you may void that out and think you are going to need it,
