2009 Hyundai Sonata Timing Chain or Belt? Sign In

Hoping someone can answer a question for me. I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with a 6 cylinder, that has 122,000 miles on it. Can someone tell me if this engine has a Timing Belt or Timing Chain. I called Hyundai and they said it has a belt, I also called my trusted auto repair shop and they said it has a maintenance free timing chain. Hopefully somebody out there knows which one.

Any information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Joe

I can only find this with a chain and assorted parts for that on the only 6 cyl. listed.

Still check with owner's manual for suggested service intervals for everything about the car.
I just looked it up on NAPA's parts site and no belt was listed - chain was like this............

Frankly if you've been good to this car, oil changes, no overheats and no problems or noises now I'd wait a lot more miles before this,

Do verify info like that as once wrong it stays wrong. Try yourself looking up a "belt" or "chain" for this car and engine at other places.

This stuff should be spelled out to the date and miles in the owner's manual. Chains in general do NOT come with some suggested periodic replacement but they too can have troubles in time/miles or bad luck.

If the info is correct a dealer telling you otherwise is unacceptable to me anyway!
