2006 Grand Prix GT Overheating and low cabin heat Sign In

I have a 2006 Pontiac grand Prix Gt 3.8 supercharged. I was getting very low cabin heat so I flushed the rad and heatercore, then the engine started to over heat and still no cabin heat unless I turn the climate control to max. I also changed the thermostat purged the system of air with the drain tap on top of the water inlet and still the engine runs very hot almost into the red and still the same cabin low heat unless dialed up to max. The coolant has been replaced with Prestone Dexcool mixed 50/50

Did you back flush the heater core? Sounds like you have air trapped in the system even though you opened the bleeder valve.

If your filling the conventional way, did you watch the coolant level in the radiator surge then drop as the thermostat opened? When it opens, you have to pour more coolant into the system. This is where those big funnels that clip on the radiator filler neck come in handy.

yes I flushed the heater core both ways then used the cleaner to flush the rad and the heater core a second time. I have filled the rad with the top hose off until full then replaced the top hosue added more coolant and ran it until hot added more coolant when the lvl fropped

It is very aggrivating. I started all of this because I had no cabin heat. Now I only have cabin heat with the climate control turn up to max and the engine is running very hot almost in the red

Are both heater hoses hot?

Could be a blend door issue causing the heater performance problem. A blend door issue won't cause overheating though.

When it is running hot are both radiator hoses hot. If the cooling fans are running, is the air blow from the fans hot?

Do the cooling fans cycle on and off or do they stay on all the time when the gauge is running hot with the ac off.

Both rad hoses are hot both heater hoses are hot. The fans come on but it still runs hot and no heat unless i have the temp turned to 32 which is max then there is lots of heat but still running hot

Could it be a bad water pump?

Do the radiator fans stay on continuously, with the ac turned off, when the gauge states it is running hot.

Normally the fans will come on around 212 degrees and then cycle back off around 200 degrees. If the fans stay on all the time, with the ac turned off, and never cycle then you can say the engine is overheating. You'll also know if you have a problem because the fans will stay on all the time and the air blowing from them will be cool even though the engine is overheating.

If the water pump wasn't working you wouldn't see any flow in the radiator when the T stat opens along the fans running continuously. The fans will also go full speed when the engine temperature gets above 221 degrees

The fans come on. It overheats when going slow but seems to stay down somewhat on the hwy but still overheats when in treaffic and low cabin heat. I just don't know wha tcould be causing it?

Ok, the fans go on, but do they cycle on and off with the ac turned off or do they run continuously? Do they ever go high speed?

If the fans are on all the time and it is overheating, that doesn't make any sense that you have hot air blowing out the radiator cooling fans.

Was it overheating before you flushed the radiator and the core? Was the system nasty inside? Have you pressure tested the coolant system when the engine was cold to see if you have any leaks?
