2003 ford explorer clicking noise and misfire Sign In

Hey guys new here, been driving a 2003 ford its got 215k miles on it, about a month ago it got a really loud clicking that seems to be coming from top left of engine. I didnt have a option to park it until i could have it checked, but last night it shut down on me on the side of the road, right before it shut down it started running a little rough, oil pressure was fine, temp was fine. I had to have it towed home, now today i picked up a obd I I it listed six codes, 2 confirmed 4 pending. The confirmed are p0420 and p0430 (catalyst system below threshold) the rest are p03000 through p0303 (missfire on cylinder 1,2 and 3). What does this sound like to you? At work so my replys may be slow.

Forgot to mention, that before it broke down on me, about 20 miles before my dad pulled the belt off and ran the car for a few seconds to see if it was a pully makeing the noise. It did still make the noise and im unsure if this could cause the problem. The car will also crank and run for a few seconds (very rough)

The P0420 and P0430 are Catalyst efficiency codes.

That's not what that means.
The P0300 means random misfire which could mean any cylinders but more than one.

The P0303 means misfire on cylinder #3.

You need to have this car looked at. You could have dropped a valve or any other number of things.

It lists P0300, p0301,p0303 an p0303, so wouldnt that be missfire on cylinder 1 2 and 3?

Those are different codes than you posted the first time and i still don't see cylinder #2.

You may have lost one of your timing chains.

Whatever happened is effecting one whole bank. I would probably start with a compression test. It may have jumped time on one side only. They use separate chains.

Ok ill take the computer back and rent a compression gauge then. Im new at mechanics but trying to learn since i have time to work on this car. Will a compression test show bad timing? If so how? Thanks by the way.

If the valve timing has jumped, it will show in the compression readings.

If it does turn out to be a timing chain, this isn't going to be a job for you. It's a very difficult job and a mistake can cause serious damage.

If that is the case, ill be takeing it back out to my dad, when it comes to engines he is pretty good, as long as its mechanical and not computer, he grew up rebuilding engines and trannys. But would the timing chain have caused a loud click/rattle?

Re: 2003 ford explorer clicking noise and misfire Sign In

If it chunked a chain, you might as well stick another engine in it. You be pulling the engine to get to the chain on the back of the engine anyway or to pull the head. Doesn't make sense to drop over a grand in parts and special tools on a high mileage engine. Look for a good used low mileage salvage yard engine with warranty.

Re: 2003 ford explorer clicking noise and misfire Sign In

If that's what it is it might get a engine swap, depending on prices. I actually have two ford engines sitting at the house that may work one is a 1997 f150 its the v8 4.6 litter wana say it was the vortex engine, and I also have a 2002 ford ranger v6 3.0 engine both engines run (both trucks were wrecked) Think either of those 2 will fit?

Nothing will work except the EXACT same engine.

Why don't you go get the truck actually diagnosed to find out if my wild guess is even true before you shop all over for a motor.
