2003 Mercury Sable stalls at idle

2003 Mercury Sable stalls at idle

My mint condition 2003 Mercury Sable has started acting-up. The car has 44K miles, and has the 24 valve Duratec engine. Quite often when I pull up to a red light or stop sign, the engine will start to roll, loose RPM's quickly and then stall. It will start right up again no problem. This ONLY happens if the heat or air conditioning is turned on. The car is equipped with climate control. I can avoid the problem by turning the heat/air off before pulling the vehicle to a stop. Of course, that's not a solution that I can live with. This condition is not only a nuisance, but, could potentially be very dangerous. I'd appreciate any ideas.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

The local mechanic was stumped. He tried changing the IAC, but without success. Then I suggested that he follow your advice and clean the intake. It worked. No more stalling ! Idles smooth as silk. THANKS.....
