2003 Hyundai Elantra won't start CEL code p0171 Sign In

My car will not start and has the code p0171. First it was having a hard time starting when cold. Then about 2 days later I was driving to work and when i accelerated the car wouldnt move. If i pumped the gas pedal, i could get it to maybe 15mph tops. I got it home and then i couldnt get it to start for a few days. Randomly i decided to go give it another try. It started up once. I tried driving it and same thing but much worse this time. Got it back in my driveway and it hasnt started since. Now, there is spark and there is compression so I know it must be a fuel issue. I went to test the fuel pressure but the car will not turn on. When the engine tries to turn over it is at 50psi. I did use SeaFoam Spray and I changed the PCV valve. Still not starting. Can anyone help me with what the causes may be. I really need to get my car back on the road.

You say there is compression. Do you have some test results?

I do not. I had a friend come by and look at it. He told me there is compression and spark. I think he just did a quick test to get a rough idea.

Taking shortcuts is the reason you haven't found your problem yet.

Do all the tests and don't skip any.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.
