The diagnostics said replace spark plugs and tune-up. That did not help. The dealer then said the diagnostics said replace the coil. When lower on fuel the engine stops more frequently.

What are the exact code numbers? Most parts stores will scan them for free and tell you what numbers are coming up.

Was the dealer able to duplicate the stalling condition?

I was having this exact same problem with my protege5. Is yours an automatic? When idling my car would shudder, and stall, completely shutting off. I was getting the engine code p0300-random misfire. Turns out I needed the engine coils replaced. They retail at about 95 each, but take 5 min to do.
Hope this helps

I forgot to mention too, I was told to check the egr valve. In the older protege5s the egr valve is apparently notorious for getting clogged with carbon and causing stalling. If it is dirty and clogged you can try cleaning it in brake cleaner overnight, but if the dirt is too built up you might have to replace it if its the problem.

he hasn't gotten back with codes in a week, so I doubt we'll be hearing much more on this one
