Troubleshooting 2001 Ford Taurus 3 liter engine issue where upon slowing & finally stopping engine continues to pull. Rpms @ 1300. If shifting to park/neutral the r's rocket to 3000. After a minute or so the r's drop suddenly & the engine stalls. Prior to this happening the trans seems to downshift or disengage as you feel & see the car jerk. It refires normally & drives until the next stop. The problem feels like a sticking cruise control. The ironic part is this car doesn't have cruise control. I've cleaned the throttle linkage, backed out the idle screw a quarter turn, cleaned beyond the throttle body, checked the IAC (previous owner replaced) & tested the TPS which passes. There are no codes. I'm wondering if this has to do the the trans kickdown via the TV cable. How would be adjusted? Anyone experienced this before? All assistance appreciated. Thanks!

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system and any mechanical issues with the throttle plate. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Just a wild thought which would be a vacuum leak issue is if this only happens with brake also applied vacuum to the booster, check valve or booster may have a leak or problem? Worth a look IMO,

That would mean the idle would immediately correct itself when the brake is released and he didn't indicate that.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I thought of vacuum leaks before posting. Especially the power brake booster, which occasionally comes off of my Lumina 3.1. I removed the throttle body & it doesn't appear to be that bad. Some minor varnish, but nothing to seem to make the linkage stick @ 1300. The problem is consistent where upon stopping the idle is high then about 30 seconds later it drops stalling the engine. If I watch the tach, I can hold the r's & give throttle when it does this to avoid the stall. Restarts every time like nothing happened. I then thought of the IAC as well, but it's new clean. The previous owner took it to a shop & they replaced the IAC three times! I removed the throttle body & deep cleaned the thing with the old toothbrush. The screw appearing to be for an idle adjustment was clockwised a quarter turn. (what is it anyway?) If nothing else works, I'd like to disassemble the EGR as much as I doubt it's relevance.
Today, enroute to Church it decided to overheat. So a new fun problem. Again, like above, nothing obvious. The overflow is empty, no obvious origin of the leak. I'll watch the overflow tank itself if that may be the issue. The drip is under the passenger side front frame. Big help I know, too much in the way to really see above the frame. Doesn't appear to be the radiator itself at this point.

This is a 3L SOHC engine. Base model as base can be. No cruise control.

Need to pressure test that cooling system and find the leak asap. If you continue driving it like that, you wont have to worry about that high idle anymore.
Back to the high idle.
Did you check/clean the iac bore? Dont trust that the previous owner did the repair correctly. Still highly suspicious of the iac. Make sure that stop screw is back to where it was, makes me wonder if previous owner messed with it too...
