2001 Mustang GT 4.6l v8 SOHC. Replaced head gaskets and engine still wont start Sign In

So basically I blew the head gaskets on my 2001 Mustang GT. I finally got up enough money to start the project and replace the heads. So me and my cousin start working on it and we get everything replaced that we need. Finally after a week we get everything back in and we feel like its ready to crank up. So I go to start the car and it just makes one click. Sounded like the starter or the battery might be bad. Checked the battery and all the connections and that was fine. Took the starter out and went to get it checked out and it turns out the starter was bad. So I bring a brand new starter home, install it, and it does the exact same thing. Sounds like the starter just makes one click. But I don't know if that's the starter making the click. I look down at the crankshaft pulley and it looks like its pretty stiff. So I grab a ratchet and a breaker bar and try to turn it by hand and I cant move it at all. It feels like the crankshaft is pinned up on something. Im not sure what it could be. Is it possible a socket or wrench could have been left down in the cams somewhere and is binding it up? Or a bolt maybe? Please someone help with suggestions. I would like to hear some ideas before we go to pulling this whole top end apart again.

Did you remove the engine? Automatic or manual?

If you remove the belt, can you turn the crank?

No we left the engine in the whole time which made things twice as hard. Its an automatic. Already tried removing the belt and it still would not turn. I really have a feeling something small might be wedged down by the cams but I seriously hope not. I'm just not sure. I'm trying to avoid taking the valve covers off again.

Got a feeling your going to have to take things back apart to see where things went wrong.

Yea I was worried of that. Is it possible that the new starter I bought could be bad as well being as it was probably refurbished?

Doubt it. If you can't turn the engine by hand, it is probably internal.

So we took the valve covers off. Turns out the cam cap bolts were way too tight so we took them all off and re torque them. We are able to turn the crankshaft a lot easier now but instead of it turning 360 degrees it only turns about 300 degrees and then stops like its caught on something. This happens when we turn it counter clockwise and clockwise. Any suggestions?

Keep investigating. You didn't get parts mixed up? Valve timing correct? If not, that engine will bend valves.

Everything was TDC before we took anything off and everything was put back the exact same way as far as timing goes. No way we could have messed that up I'm pretty sure. Going to do some more digging today

Found the problem. Ending up pulling the heads back off and it turns out the guy who surfaced my heads had the valve for the number one cylinder sticking out too far. Instead of turning the crankshaft by hand 2 full cycles before we put everything back together, we just kept on going. So when I tried to turn the car over the piston came up and broke that valve and dented the inside of my piston. Now I'm looking at a whole other project but at least I found the problem. Thanks for the help

That stinks. Maybe your better off slapping a new set of heads on it, instead of playing with those. With the overheating, you could also have warped cam journals or have other hidden problems you don't want to run into. Thanks for keeping us posted.

I have another question please. Could anyone please tell me where the ignition control module is located on my car? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I have individual coil packs for all 8 plugs. Does that mean I wouldn't need an ignition module?

That's because you don't have one. The PCM does that job.

Alright I was hoping for that because I spent too long trying to find the ICM. So could the PCM be burned up from when the car overheated? Can I take the PCM into auto zone to be tested?

Re: 2001 Mustang GT 4.6l v8 SOHC. Replaced head gaskets and engine still wont start Sign In

Not would be no and no.

You need to start with the basics.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

I've checked compression and fuel pressure already. All is good. Its the no spark that is my problem. Brand new battery, new starter, new coil packs, new crankshaft position sensor.

Do you have injector pulse? How did you test it?
What is the fuel pressure?
