2000 windstar high rpm issues

180k on Van, 50k on engine.

Hi,
Van was garaged for 10 months. When rolled out it would not start. Mechanic diagnosed fuel pump and replaced. Also drained and replaced fuel. I drove it some, seemed fine. Then one day driving up a steep hill I punched it just to see how it'd do. All seemed fine. It did blow out a brown cloud that I thought might be rust from the exhaust system from sitting. A few days later I started it up. Sounded fine. Reved it up and it starts missing at 4k rpm. Pushing the pedal down further does not seem to increase the rpm and it sputters quite a bit.

Looking for ideas please.

To start with, get the codes read and post the exact code numbers for us. How did it run prior to storage? I wonder if while it was sitting a mouse got up in the exhaust and made a nest. A plugged exhaust would give you the issues you describe and it had plenty of time for them to make themselves at home.

It ran well prior to storage.
I'll post the codes when I get them

You might want to look for signs of rodents in the engine compartment too. They just love to chew on wires.

Indeed HT, mice seem to like wring insulation as they can easily remove it. Also be sure to take the airbox apart, they love making a nest in airboxes and HVAC systems.
