I've been having this weird problem every once and a while that's been going on for a couple years, and it's not that big of a deal when it happens but it does make me worry a bit. And i'm sick of it.

First off, I have a new timing belt, new serpentine belt, and a brand new battery. I also just did an oil change. I have changed 2 of 6 of the ignition coils since I've had the car(bought with 97k miles on it , and it has 173k now). It's the 3.0 v6 EX, 2000 Honda sedan.

So basically, if I drive the car, and it gets up to operating temperature(so if I drive it for 5 minutes to 2 hours or whatever) and then let it sit for just a few minutes...it becomes a pain to start. For whatever reason after it cools down just slightly, I try to start it and it just runs horribly rough at 500-800 rpm, and then just stalls. The only way to start it is to turn the key and immediately press the gas and keep the rpm @ about 2500-3000 for 30 seconds or so, and then it returns to normal, idling steadily at 800rpm. While having the engine revved, the check engine light starts flashing and eventually goes away.

Example, i went to publix once and my car was fully warmed up, I went inside and got a sub made for me, and then went to leave and my car wouldn't start unless I kept my foot on the gas for about a minute, then it returned to normal.

This happens quite rarely so i've swept it under the rug for years.

However, today I gave my friend a ride somewhere 50 miles away and turned the car off for just a few minutes...maybe 5-10 mins.. and it was the worst ever. I turned the key, it idled at 250-500 rpm for less than a second and then stalled. I revved it for a minute and was able to drive off successfully....but for about 3-4 minutes it basically felt like another ignition coil had went. Letting off the brake while sitting at a light caused an extremely jerky forward motion until gas was applied.

I drove it down 95 for another 50 miles and all was well again, no jerkyness..and then went to work never dealing with the problem.

This problem has NEVER happened when the engine is dead cold. It's ALWAYS after the car was warmed fully, and then is turned off and cools a bit. Then the problem just always goes away. The check engine light never permanently stays on.

The local auto shop diagnosing thing doesn't reveal any codes.

I am baffled. I have no idea what on earth this problem is, but i'm sick of it. I don't want it to get worse either.

What in the world could this problem be? Its never happened when warmed up, and I shut off my car, and then start it up like 30 secs-1 min later. It's gotta sit for like 5-15 mins

Some trouble shooting is going to have to be done on that one. Maybe connect up a fuel pressure gauge and see what pressure looks like when the problem is occurring and to see if you have any fuel pressure bleed off issues. If you have leaking injectors or regulator, that could cause a start stall or rough running engine till the excessive fuel is burned off.

How is the coolant level in this thing? I've seen head gasket leaks cause an engine to run rough when first started because the cylinders are burning the coolant off.

Could be a sensor or electrical issue that only shows up after a heat soak. You have to monitor data stream information, look at crank and cam signals, look at EGR pintle info, check to see if there are any manufacture trouble codes stored, find out which cylinders are missing, etc.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks!

I'm not very mechanically inclined so I think the only thing I know how to do on that list is check the coolant. I was expecting that this would be a complicated issue.

I think I might take it to a shop and try to "start" the problem... One thing I forgot to include is...it seems to happen (seems, i'm not really sure..) after the car has been sitting there idling for a lil bit, and then turned off and cools down a bit..

I'll follow up soon
