2000 Chevy Malibu 3.1 V6 140000 will not start Sign In

 Hello, First post here,
My sons 2000 chevy Malibu overheated and blew a head gasket. We had the heads planed, reinstalled everything with new headbolts. No it will not start. It acts like the timing is way off. It cranks, misfires but won't start.
It has spark, has about 125 psi compression test.
I'm lost on what to do next.
Thanks
Craig

Did you mix up the pushrods?

No, I did take the valve covers off to make sure. No valves or push rods were bent and all working properly when I cranked it a few times.
It acts like the firing order is off. I checked the firing order multiple times to make sure I had the plug wires on right.

That's not what I asked you.

Did you put the pushrods back in the same order you removed them or did you mix them together. They are different you know.

Yes they went back in the same order, I pushed them into cardboard & labeled it.

Back to basics

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Thanks for the help Hammer Time,
I do not have a spark tester (I'll have to get one) I did have spark at the plugs. Removed them & did a visual while cranking.
I will need to confirm the other systems and post the info.

The spark tester is pretty important is telling you how strong your spark is. You can get an adjustable one for under $5.

Great Thanks,
I haven't really done much of this work since the early eighties. I have the Chilton manual but they aren't all what they used to be.

You didn't get the firing order off did you??? #1 is on the firewall side of the engine, not the rad side

 Sidom,
Yes I did have it wrong, Thanks!!
The Chilton manual shows #1 on the radiator side.
Replaced the cooling fans, resevior sensor and got it running. After it warmed up it started idling rough & has a fault code, P0203, injector circuit 3 open. I'll make sure I have all the connectors in tight.
