1999 Dodge 1500 4x4 Stalls after recent repair Sign In

Good Morning to all and thank you for even looking,

Year - 1999
Make - Dodge
Model - Ram 1500 4x4
Engine - 5.9L
Mileage ~215,586

To begin, I am not a mechanic and do not have much experience in automotive repair so please be patient as i attempt to give as much detail about my situation as i can.

Recently, Friday, I discovered the pulley on my AC Compressor was not spinning. As the other pulleys in my engine area spun, the serpentine belt would get hot on the high point and over time, as i let the truck idle, once i put it into drive the belt would snap and the truck would stall.

In order to get to the ac compressor i reomoved my air filter. I removed the AC Compressor and installed an by=pass bracket and installed a smaller serpintine belt to fit correctly. Reinstalled the air filter.

I recently had trouble starting the vehicle in the cold new England weather so i removed my alternator and battery for testing. Turns out the alternator is in great condition however i needed a new battery.

Reinstalled the alternator and new battery. The truck fired up right away without any issues. Drove it all day yesterday and no issues.

This morning driving to work, as i was taking a right turn, the car stalled. I used all my strength to turn the wheel and pull over to the side of the road. Put the truck in N and was able to push the truck into a safe location.

When i turn the truck off and attempt to restart, it is clicking or cranking, it wants to start, its right there but wont turn over all the way. I spank the gas pedal a few times to try and help it but it doesn't do anything. The engine doesn't rev at all as i normally would in the situation.

The belt is still fine. The pulleys look to all spin freely. The battery hookups look fine. The only thing i wasn't able to check was the electrical connections on the alternator as i wasn't able to climb in under the hood at the time and examine.

This is as much detail as i possibly think to offer you folks. Any help would be excellent and appreciated.

Do you have a volt meter?

OK - YOU or someone used a "compressor by-pass" bracketed item with a pulley to take the spot of now removed compressor - right? Yes they do make those especially for perfect fit and those who are NOT going to repair their A/C to work again and I wouldn't with the miles nor for New England - I'm here too.


Never used one of those but rather just got a used compressor with good pulley that requires no special anything just don't allow it to work again. Belt then is the same it would have called for.


What it sounds like is you now have totally the wrong belt and should be identical? Wrong in # of grooves or not in plane with the other items on it including the alternator by strong guess isn't charging because it's slipping or belt already messed up again?


These kits to by-pass shouldn't alter the belt used or how it's adjusted or it went all wrong IMO. If stuck now (you are) and no better choices do what I do and put a used compressor on it with just a good clutch and bearing is all you should need and forget the A/C working. You just must not allow it to try to work as a compressor again by disconnecting wires to clutch at least as it will possibly try to kick on with defrost or b-level request from inside for a few seconds and hard for you to understand perhaps but then compressor's shaft is the bearing not the clutch - two different bearing ideas in one item and you only need a free clutch and pulley that works as just a pulley and nothing more,

 This is a long shot, but I'll throw this one out there for you. If I remember right off the top of my head this truck has a small ground wire for the ECM with an eyelet on it that bolts down on one of the alternator bolts. It was one with a stud, a nut comes down to hold the eyelet. If it got damaged but still makes a little bit of contact sometimes it could in theory cause a no start or a stall as it would cut the ground off to the ECM and shut it down. Usually all I've seen out of it is a complete no start with an ECM not being able to power up, but may be worth a look as you just got done working in the area.
