1996 F150 Hard Starting And Stalls When Put Into Gear Sign In

I have a 1996 Ford F150 with a 5.0 engine. This truck will not start unless you hold the gas pedal to the floor, then it will start run rough for a few seconds then idle normally. The other problem we are experiencing is that when the truck is running, as soon as you put it into gear, either Reverse or Drive, it stalls out instantly. Have tried replacing the idle control bypass, throttle position sensor, ignition module, new plugs, distributor, and wires. Have ran out of ideas of what the problem could be with this vehicle. Any help would be greatly helpful.

Easy tossing stuff it gets expensive fast. Sure seems like it's flooding out as pedal to floor should stop fuel for starting mode.

Get codes and post #s. There has to be something in memory on this being a 1996,

There is definitely a strong smell of gas like it is flooding out. Unfortunately the owner of the vehicle had already dropped all the new parts into it before I was able to look at it. The only code that I was able to pull was P1351 Manufacturer control ignition system or misfire. tried doing some research on this but couldn't really find anything about it other then ignition module.

OK - not thrilled with that code as of course it's misfiring. Just done looking to see it they still used a real 5.0 in 1996 as I thought it was done with by then?

So, with little or no help from computer and all the items tossed take your pick, toss one more under $20 bucks, (CTS) or test it. NOT ONE HAS EVER FAILED ME ON A FORD don't ask why just luck or who knows.

Should be near thermostat and tells the computer how warm the engine is and bet the signal is saying it's always wildly colder than it is. I don't have a chart for what ohms should read real handy but should have just two wires to it and screws into engine with plumbing threads - a bit like a spark plug just screws in but these seal coolant.

Looks like this.........

The ohms should change with temps engine off it will read different if warm then cold like overnite. If it doesn't change it would be bad. If it does probably not that item but could be plug to it or wiring. Just a strong hunch for this that is the problem area,

ok, thank you. I will look into that. My other thoughts were maybe map sensor or the actual ignition where the key goes in to start the vehicle. One thing I did notice is that when you have the truck running you are able to pull the key right out of the ignition. I know I've read a few things on other cars that having a bad ignition could lead to other problems within the motor, but I don't recall seeing anything about something like that causing stalling when you put the transmission into gear.

Jeez - I need a slap for thinking 1996 is so new - ha! Check vacuum anything anywhere. Vac connectors at least used to be like multi-plugs for the cars and didn't mess with too many trucks but tons of 5.0s just a mirror image for trucks vs cars otherwise same idea.

Vacuum is an indicator of engine load but not consistent to me with this cranking issue. Flooding after starting if MAP sensor was thinking it was under load maybe. Check them anyway as they go from rubber to this now brittle plastic line that can snap like raw pasta.

It all has to be right of course. Check that sensor for ohms changing with temps. Hard to get into the plug with probes but can be done or hate to but pierce wires with the finest needle and seal the spot when done getting a reading.

Do hurry to fix this as the over fueling is trashing cat converter(s) now and would be the next problem but up the bucks a lot!

If everything checks get a better code reading. OBDII should know more than just a misfire to help target the right problem. It was saying foot to floor helped that was a great clue so far,

After doing a little more research on the issue with this truck, I have found that it could be a possible MAF sensor. Does this sound like a good possibility to anyone else on the site?

MAF will cause driveability issues, but usually its under load. What is your fuel pressure at? Does it bleed down with the key off?
