1995 contour loses power when giving it gas and tranny going in and out of gear real hard Sign In

Hi folks and let me say thank you ahead of time. This is my wife's car. Her boss gave her a 1995 Ford Contour GL 2.0L with 90,972 miles on it.

When we got the car it ran fine except the fan did not work, so I ran a bypass wire to the battery and it came on. I was just going to hook up a toggle switch, but that went wrong. I burned all the insulation off the wires and burned one other wire. The wire was green with a black line. If I read the book right, it goes to the low speed cooling fan relay, which I fixed. I looked into it more and found that it was the coolant temperature sensor. I put a new one in and the fan now works, but some how at that same minute the car started jerking real bad when you give it gas and seems to lose power for maybe 3 seconds. When it goes into gear, it slams back and forth into 1st and 2nd. It only seems to act right if you floor it.

It can be driven, but it don't feel safe. I have tried to look and ask around. People say it could be the vehicle speed sensor or the transmission range sensor, but i looked at it i don't think there is any way I could have knocked that loose.

Oh ya, the cruise control does not work either. I took it to Autozone to see if there were any codes. There was only one and it was 179 (lean adaptive limit bank #1). All the fuses are good and the vacuum hoses seem to be hooked up. I can't see any thing I knocked off.

Please help if you can. I am disabled and can not spend the money right now to get it to a shop. I REALLY want my truck back from my wife.

God Bless

You burned some wires up and you replaced the ECT sensor. Some where something went wrong. How did you burn your wires up. What were you connecting to what?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

i was trying to put in a toggle switch and the wires i hooked up with the switch melted i guess i did not have it grounded right but it was not the wires to the car well one did from the car it was green with a black line and it just melted a little spot on the copper it self and i fixed it and thank you vary much for taking the time to even read my post this has got my goat (when i was putting in the toggle switch i put pos+ and neg- wires from the fan to the battery and then did the same to the switch i now know that's not right or i had them on the wrong side of the switch ) and the only thing i have put on the car was the coolant temp sensor
