1995 Nissan Maxima dies @ lights & stop signs

My 95 Nissan Maxima has started dying when coming to a stop. It does not die in park. Only in drive, and not EVERY time, but more often lately. Guy I bought it from says he adjusted the idle as low as he could for whatever reason, and told me to turn the black screw counter clockwise. Did it, don't HEAR a difference but haven't driven it yet... Smells like fuel every time it dies and I have to start it up. Sometimes is starts right back up, other times it takes forever, and I always have to keep my foot on the gas. Mornings it takes a bit to start up to, and smells like fuel for a bit. Not EVERY morning, but sometimes... When it dies, breaks go hard, and power steering goes out. Lookin for answers. Not a gear head at all... As simple as you can explain it the better... Thanks!

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.
