1995 Chevy C1500 - Died - won't start

Hi All, Thanks for reading my post. I'll get right into the meat n potatoes. 95 chevy silverado 1500. 4.3L v6. 188K miles. I was driving home from work, I heard squealing, I pulled over and shut it down. Couldn't start back up. the starter 'chugs' as it turns over, but to no avail. I've noticed a little bit of squealing at certain RPM's leading up to this just beginning earlier this week. I noticed when I was pulling over that my Voltmeter on the dash had began to lower, and I smelled possibly burning rubber? I feel like it is related to the serp belt or the tensioner. The belt was still on and intact. I was on the freeway @ 2:00 AM so I got it towed home and now here I am. I was hoping you kind folks could give me a game plan to assist in diagnostics. I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Tim EDIT: I suppose I should add- I live in Wisconsin, and we had a pretty darn cold winter so far this year, and I hadn't had trouble throughout. This passed week, when noticing noise, we had a bit of a heatwave (30 F, I use warm lightly).

You probably want to remove the drive belt and see if any of the driven components are worn out or seized. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

When sound and voltmeter changes show up check the alternator for burnout. Put a voltmeter on the battery and read 12.5 volts as a good battery, I would suspect a short through the alternator if it is not. Turn the engine and see if it moves to 14.7 volts steady, listen for screaming from the alternator, and smell it.
