Last summer or fall, I had put in a new fuel filter (totally clogged) and had a mechanic look it over and do what he thought best. He did a bunch of stuff and put in a new fuel pump as well. The car has had a ton of work done to it over the years, and in the last year, too, but it still needs a new timing chain so it does make a little noise.

For about the last six months, someone else has been driving the car for the most part, but I drove it sometimes, and when I did, it would not accelerate, and kept giving out, so I'd have to downshift and keep the gas slow and steady, and then it would be ok, until a stop sign or something.

Then just last week, the car stopped working. I was not driving it. I towed it home and I was told that it had oil everywhere due to a bad leak. When I looked at it, I thought the valve cover gasket was missing, so I got a new gasket, and went to put it on today.

I disconnected some stuff and when I went to unscrew the cover, I noticed that ALL the screws were loose. I tightened them up and the car turned over, but would not start. Then the battery started to get tired, so I stopped.

I continued to look under the hood, with my Chilton's in hand, and again noticed something funny. There are 2 places on top of the valve cover that look like they are broken off plastic. I can't tell if it was that way before, and on ebay/other sites, people have pics of their cars looking just the same, but on some other photos (just google and then click images) it looks like something is indeed attached, in the top center anyway. You'll understand more once I post the photos.

Well, then, yet again, I noticed something strange. A hose just there, not connected to anything. I followed it back and under, and it seems like it might be cut off. I tried to see what it might possibly attach to, as there's no way a hose that shape would be there if it wasn't needed, and I can't figure it out. I am unable to find reference to it in the Chilton's book either.
NOTE: we did have a problem with the car not starting due to faulty clutch sensor, or whatever it is, and a friend mechanic bypassed that somehow.

I am not sure what to do at this point, but can probably fix it if I know what it is.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Here are the photos with some explanations on them.

UPDATE: I just noticed a metal fitting coming out of the top of the transmission, which is on the right side, and that hose might be able to reach to it. The fitting is really dirty though, which could be from all the oil spilled. On the other hand, it's possible it just has just been that way for a long time.
