here's my problem... I'm a mechanic by trade, but haven’t repaired cars for a living for many years.

I just did this job for my neighbor. 1993 Chev Lunina with a 3.1 V-6, The car came to me with the heads off, I was told it had a stripped spark plug hole, but otherwise was running fine. My neighbor bought reman heads from a local reputable parts house/machine shop, along with new gaskets and head bolts. I installed the heads and along the way found the pipe nipple that the lower radiator hose goes to was snapped off, along with the oil dip stick... apparently whomever took it apart (not my neighbor) was a bit careless.

The lower hose nipple is one piece cast with the timing cover, so my neighbor bought a used timing cover, and as long as we were in there, a new timing chain and gears.

I got everything back together, with the only other stumbling block was i found out the hard way there is 2 different length push rods for the intake and exhaust, i got those all straightned out. Here is 1 question.. I noticed the rocker studs had a shoulder on them, so when I put the rockers on, I ran the nuts down snug, which left 4-5 threads sticking through the nut. Should I have set these like an old small block? Zero lash plus 1/4 turn?

I finished the job with new plugs and plug wires following the plug wire routing on the radiator support. Here is the main problem... it wont start! Cranks fine, did a little shade tree check for fuel at the fuel rail, got a 6-8" spurt of fuel into the air, so i have fuel. I thought maybe not enough fuel, so I gave it a shot of carb spray in the throttle body... nothing.
It does fire, but sounds way out of time, it fires and fires and fires, then backfires and sneezes. This lead me to think maybe i messed up and got the timing chain off a tooth...so I pulled it back apart... but it was dead on, both arrows aiming at each other. I triple checked the plug wire routing, and I confirmed I have spark from each of the coils (has distributorless ignition)

Help! Any ideas? Cam sensor? crank sensor? Valves to tight (see above how i did the valves) Who knows what else the guy that pulled it apart may have broken. I don’t have a computer scan tool, but I do have a DVOM.

when you say you found out the hard way about the push rods do you mean you tried to start it with the push rods in the wrong spots?if you did you most likley bent the valves.short push rods for intake long push rods for exhaust.there is no adjustment, just tighten down till tight
