1992 Dodge Spirit rocker arms falling off Sign In

I recently inherited a 1992 Dodge Spirit with a 2.5l engine. It only has 50,000 miles on it and was running great. Now all of a sudden the rocker arms keep falling off. When I first removed the valve cover, there were 2 loose rocker arms. I got the valve spring compression tool and reattached them. Then when cranking the engine another fell off. Reattached that one and then it seemed to run okay for about a half-hour. Closed it all up and ran okay for another half hour. Next time I started it was running rough again, and another rocker arm fell off!!!

Anybody have any ideas? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Arggh! Been at this for years and never saw that! Best I can suggest is are valve springs ok? Timing belt Ok? Way out there would be a broken cam shaft - not likely but neither are your problems. Good luck,

Like Tom said this is a strange one.
What I would do is get back in there and remove all the rockers, compare them, looking for any signs uneven of wear.
Also remove the timing belt so you can rotate the cam freely, check it for excessive side movement and any up and down movement at the bearing journals
The camshaft lobes, do they all look the same?
Are the lifters collapsing due to low oil pressure/volume? The way I read your post you ran the engine with the valve cover off?
If that’s right you should have had the biggest mess under the hood with oil being flung all over the place.
There is an oil restrictor in the head it’s there to lower the volume of oil going to through the head, it maybe plugged if there isn’t a lot of oil getting to the top end.
With the rockers off check the valve springs for even tension.
With random different rockers coming off I think it would have to be something common to all rockers.
Dan.
