1986 Pontiac Parisienne starting trouble

Could anybody give advise on how to possibly fix a starting problem, will explain more when someone replies. It's very sick!!

Last year I was driving it, and at highway speed, the HEI clip disengaged from the distributor. The car jolted really bad, and died. Smoke and slight flames from carberator, but reconnected the clip and car started no problem. Next day, really hard start at cold. Car would only start if I manually held open choke, and would run perfectly after. Had to repeat process any time engine completely cooled.
This year, problem still not fixed. Decided to change 20 yrold OEM catalytic convertor, and installed a new Magnaflow Performance Cat. Car ran fine for about 2 hrs, then it kept wanting to stall. Thought there was a problem with the carb, so I put on a replacement carb I have. Worked beautifully for about 5 hrs, then the RPM went sky high, threatening to damage Transmission. Tried adjusting Idle, wouldn't work. Put on original carb and RPM still sky high. Tried adjusting, turned down Idle, car stalled. Reset Idle to where it was, car ran, shifted it into drive, went to pull out and car died immediately. Same recurring problem anytime it's started.
Also noticed that gas is somehow getting into vapor canister.

Good thought Tom; what I’m concerned about is the fuel in the canister, maybe the carb is flooding due to the needle and seat sticking or dirt stuck on the needle.
Not to take away from this site but I’ve posted a reply on the other site as what to try.
Sorry admin I feel like I’m cheating on my wife and just got caught. LOL

Dan and all,
DanD it's NOT cheating - we try help folks as best we can by keyboard. Dang - it was tricky with problems in front of you and computers are great but they still don't see and hear very well what is happening out there. You've helped a lot of people and the site needs you.
Back to the person Jamick with a flooded charcoal canister. Jamick I'm not sure but it could be a mud wasp problem but in general they don't like the smell of gasoline but I think that happened to me once. Hard to say but we are here to help, T

Well, I'm sure if we have that type of problem this far north, but every bit of advice is worth looking in to. Thanks for the little tidbits of info.
I'm still looking into the vaccuum leak possibility, I'm having someone come by tomorrow to check into it a lot further than I can. I definitely don't have tools like a Pressure gauge which is needed for that, but he does.

I don't know where mud wasps are are a problem. They almost destroyed me with some stuff like a boat - that caused all kinds of air flow problems - the worst was the holding tank for the toilet (head) which almost exploded!!!! I caught it and just squishing the rubber lines got the mud out which was air tight?? No venting almost made a disaster.
Dan mentioned the needle valve and they are a pill to get at and clean out and NEVER use the teflon tape on gasoline fittings as the smallest shred will cause problems and solvents won't help. Trying to get you fixed up, T

Who knew those wasps could cause so much havoc!!? But luckily you caught the problem before anything bad happened!
Removed Vapor canister and found bottom filter clogged beyond belief!! Removed. There still seems to be a serious air leak somewhere in engine, because my guy that came out today got absolutely no vaccuum reading at the ventri on carb. Confused him to hell!!! Will be back tomorrow with compression gauge to test al other areas, including cylinders! Hope he finds somethng to fix!!LOL
